I'm going to give two psychological points that make me think marriage is important in some circumstances.

When parents divorce, they often fight passive aggressively through their children. That is extremely damaging. However, if the child can see both parents readily, they are able to feel much more secure.

Also, it can show a very strong trust in another person to say that you want to live ith them for the rest of your life. Is it necessary? No. It is a good show of empathy though.

And since being a bad boy is seen as attractive to the opposite sex, then that is what unattached men aspire to. This happens very quickly in a socialist state.

Huh? I'm a lover, not a fighter, so I hardly came across as aggressive and competitive when I met my wife. On top of that, my wife thinks of that sort of individual you described as an as*hole.
By the way, socialist states such as New Zealand and the countries of northern Europe hardly produces masses of such men.

In a barbaric society marriage makes perfect sense. for without marriage laws the barbarian would accuse his enemy of stealing his woman and would plot violent acts of revenge.

I think the Disneyland version of marriage is becoming obsolete. Growing up as a Mormon, I was taught that marriage was something to look forward to, the subtext; you finally get to have sex. I remember guys getting married at 21 to women they'd known for a few weeks.

The other half of my life has been spent around non Mormons. I have a lesbian friend with a child who doesn't have a firmly established career. Her mom and sister are more than willing to step in and take care of her kid while she's in nursing school.

IMO, most of us don't get a serious career established until we're almost 30, but we procreate before we're 25. Two poor people trying to raise a kid is hard, just trying to make it without the kid is hard, living costs money.

Probably because there is less biological diversity in these countries. thus slower to change, but change does happen. In a more diverse country, I am sure some young Nigerians would find interesting ways release some of that large pot of public money and Roma gypsies would capitalise on on the generous wealth fair. The only way to protect against this is to implement anti diversity policies( racist policies) or other Big-Brother policies.

The alternative is to be a country where you keep more of what you earn, and hard work is reworded.

People are basically "barbaric". So even in an ostensibly civilized society there is still the need for institutions like marriage.

It is obsolete if you don't feel anything about it. I don't feel much about marriage, just that I'd never want to buy "the dress" or get "the ring".

I link a lot of marriage to, well, religion, too.

I don't think I could show someone else my love by marrying them. And I don't think marriage is necessary. It has always felt more of an obligation for me because I am the last person who wants to see me married.

I can't remember where I read this, but apparently it has been shown that complete monogamy is unhealthy.

I have heard that, too. ^^

It would be interesting to know more about this.

it's in that book, Sex at Dawn. the authors seek to prove we are not naturally monogamous.

if people share their husbands and wives there is no need to fight over them.

It might not mean much in the religious sense. But people enjoy it, they find a wedding fun and are happy with the legal and financial comforts that come with it.
I'm not interested in marriage but I can understand the idea despite the divorce rates being so high.

The leading cause of divorce is marriage.

While marriage existed before the three Abrahamic religions (IIRC), it most likely started as an institution of ancient religions. By that rationale, Monogamy is more than likely simple religious dogma.

The decline of marrige is definitely having a huge negative impact on society in nearly every aspect. Increased poverty, increased crime, more burden on the state/tax payers, etc.
