The problem isn't successful capitalists. It's successful lobbyists.

I've been thinking about this from another angle. Think about the environment. Okay, some people say the damage to the environment isn't that bad, that scientists and ecologists exaggerate or are misguided. Or some may just say these people are unrealistic, that the cost to environment is a necessary evil.

Who have been better stewards of the environment? The former Communist regimes, or the West?

Who is at the forefront of developing green technologies? The Russians, perhaps? Not the nasty ol' capitalists, surely.

Who is responsible for the destruction of the Aral Sea?

Which large, heavily polluted city in a large Communist country recently tried banning bicycles in favor of cars?

In the West, lefties were partly responsible for things like the US Clean Air and Clean Water Acts, and deserve credit for that.

In Communist countries, have environmentalists been allowed to be as vocal as in the West?

The West still has plenty to do on environmental issues. However, the notion that handing more control to Communist-type regimes will somehow accelerate environmental cleanup seems, based on past history, laughable.

Communism works, but only within groups small enough for social bonds to serve as currency. Like a kibbutz. Once the group gets too large, problems with free loaders, and the need to use coercion to extract production from laborers rise dramatically.

Pure democracy isn't terribly nice either, because it depends on the good will of the majority for the minority to have anything.

And if I may say so, you're confusing economic and political structures. Communism is an economic structure, democracy is a political structure.

True, communism is really only an economic system. One thing I find strange: why did Marx criticise religion so strongly when he surely would have noticed that generally religion and communism promote similar ideals and that religion may only be repressive if it is controlled by some bigoted person?
And now for some more randomness.

Communism and Religion often dont work together because of different beliefs, what if the leader was a fierce protestant? I am a (usually) easygoing Catholic, Uh-oh, I hear Tim LaHaye(HERETIC) breaking down my door.

Marx said that religion was basically (yet another) tool of oppression. All it exists for is to enable the ruling class to supress the working class, supposedly. It's an elaborate system of threats (ie 'You'll go to Hell if you don't obey these 10 Commandments!', and so on) designed to control people's behaviour.

No. Communisms left wing. its just that the Soviet Union dosent fit into that categroy. At leest not after lenin died. Stalin was a fascist, and made the Soviet Union into a fascist state, only communist in name.

Most of them preferd Lenin to the tsars. They also preferd Lenin or pretty much ennyone else to Stalin. It was Stalin who was the tyrant.

You know, I find it odd that the poll has resulted in 13 George Bush's.....

Anyways. I personally think communisim, while an admirable goal, will never be achieved, because humanity is always competitive.
