I modified my social-and-economic development website for Autists to include a reference to sustainable development:

United Against Neurelitism

Sustainable development is discussed here:

Agenda 21

and here:

The Earth Charter

and finally here:

Conservation and Sustainable Development in the Baháʾí Faith

Agenda 21 is pretty ominous stuff.

Even their pro-Agenda 21 videos makes it look bad. I posted some a while ago and it was scary as hell.

Most people who make negative comments about Agenda 21 have never read the document.

My suggestion is to read it, not to rely upon secondary sources or videos.

Would you say this is an inaccurate portrayal of their long term vision? This is done by a major globalist group in a completely serious tone. I would assume any sane person would have a major problem with this video.

You realize that the video is a parody, right?

This page explains what they are doing:

http://www.forumforthefuture.org/project/megacities-move/overview

The idea of the cartoon you posted is to encourage people to take action before things turn out that way.

I am pessimistic on "sustainability" I think we may have already passed the tipping point.
Maybe we should just focus on making a soft landing in the inevitable economic collapse.

Perhaps, but that doesn't mean we should make things worse.

Oh of course not but I think the focus should not be prolonging the current situation but preparing for a time when mass transport of people and goods is impossible. For example local agriculture, walk-able cities remembering folkcrafts blacksmithing soap making etc. Building community norms based on inter-reliance etc. I think we may be better off if we ran out of fuel earlier rather than later. The other species surely would.

I agree with you. I think that localism is more sustainable on a global scale.

I think things like the 100 mile diet are worthy of promoting. Its tough in most places but were I live I can collect oysters in months without "r"s and crabs in months with them Bread is tougher we try to source local flour for our bread not always succeeding.

Yes, but just localism in general. I think that, sooner or later, we may be pushed in that direction.

It's not a parody at all. You can't watch the videos on their website anymore since I guess they realized people thought they were crazy. They had 4 scenarios of life in cities in 2040. 'Planned-opolis" and "Renew-abad" were their ideal scenarios,"Communi-City" was basically what they predict will happen if we acted too late, and "Sprawl-ville" was a wholly negative prediction of what life would be like if they didn't act at all. You can find the videos elsewhere if you dig around for them.

Um. Did you read that page I linked to? It explains the video.

The technical term for what they are doing is "alternative futures." In other words, the group is trying to highlight some of the problems the world might face if it does not make more ecologically sound decisions.

There is so much division in this world right now. There seems to be a desire to demonize views which do not agree with one's own.

Sustainable development is a mainstream concept. It is not some radical position advocated by a bunch of totalitarian wackos. The people who oppose it are usually extreme libertarians.

You were right in your initial statement: No sane person would want a future like that. Right. That is because they don't.

This is a direct quotation from that page:

Quote:
Forum for the Future’s scenarios are not predictions or depictions of desirable futures which we wish to promote, and they do not represent our vision of a sustainable future. They are pictures of different possible futures, designed to help people understand the major trends that are shaping our world. They aim to challenge, inspire and excite, so that people feel motivated to plan for a better, more sustainable future.
