Marriage does not produce children. Men and women do - inside of marriage, and outside of it. Given the divorce rate, the number of disfunctional married families and the fact that family counsoling and family therapy are thriving industries, I'd say that to the extent we want to credit marriage as a producer of "healthy and well-adjusted children", we also have to credit it to the same extent as the world's #1 producer of mal-adjusted children.

Evidence please?

So you are saying the path my cousin made is less stable for his kids? Please provide some proof. They are a happy family.

The divorce rate is 2-3 in UK-US. So people's perceptions of marriage don't necessarily match the reality. They even found that divorce lawyers had unrealistic expectations of their own marriages. That just shows how skewed the views are on marriage.

I not trying to tell people not to get married, I'm saying that legal status doesn't in itself produce stable place to bring up kids. In fact the mess of divorce can sometime make it much more divisive.

Marriage does not produce children--sexual intercourse and fertility therapies produce children.

Marriage does not make children happy and well adjusted, good parents make children happy and well adjusted.

Neither of those things are in any way dependent upon or caused by marriage.

It looks like a lot of people are starting to come around to the idea of taking the partnership business out of the state's hands. I couldn't agree more, if marriage has been a religiously coined term then it needs to be kept on that side of the court for the religious to define and hold as their own.

The only issue that comes up as a potential issue is child custody and support. I'm not sure what kind of legal caveats come up with non-binding partnerships aside from, say, biological heredity and/or adoption contracts.

Does your marriage provide you with a guaranteed job?

What does a guaranteed job have to do with the price of tea in China?
No, but marriage brings me happiness.

Of course an angelic society where there is no marriage would have guaranteed jobs. It would be like one big family.

As an Anarchist I believe in the principle of non violence or force. As the currently law stands, if two men marry they will be either fined or kidnapped and lock up. Perhaps it can be proven by some high authority that gay marriage is non beneficial to sociality but it would be worse to enforced a law supported by violence that prohibits it.

Kidnapping or locking up gay couples? Where do you reside?
