They have a huge monument of the 10 Commandments, and claim that they aren't promoting one religion over another. Let's see if they mean it by giving them a family-friendly monument to Satan.

I understand that other religious groups also intend to fund monuments to place at the OK Capitol building, and I'd love to hear about them.

Why does this matter? I know very little about Oklahoma.

The Religious Right is strong in Oklahoma. The 1st Amendment to the US Constitution says that the government can't promote the establishment of a particular religion, and the 14th Amendment extends that prohibition to state governments. Lots of right-wingers can't stand this, and defy it every chance they get by promoting the radical Leviticanism that they call Christianity. Some people who want to defend the first and fourteenth amendments would like the state government of Oklahoma to remove their statue. Other people think it would be better to erect monuments to lots of different religions, and a monument to atheism as well. I think the second way sounds like more fun.

Oklahoma is basically the Afghanistan of America. It's filthy, built on top of giant oil wells, filled with heavily armed zealots, and it has ridiculous poverty levels. I spent the earliest years of my life there, and it's really just a terrible place all around. As a bonus, you get the biggest tornadoes on the entire planet. And when it isn't raining, it's on fire.

Yeah, you guys have fun over there.

Oklahoma is full of all kinds of crazy but it's diverse. It depends on where you are. Oklahoma City is the most liberal place. The poverty is ridiculous and a lot of towns and cities cannot manage themselves worth a crap. When they are criticized, their response tends to be "if you don't like it leave" which pisses me off. Why not listen to some constructive criticism? Yeah i can see why some people would have a lot of vitriol in their hearts about Oklahoma but it's not really like Afghanistan. That's a stretch. It's more like Tennessee.

Ramming religion down everyone's throat is not necessary. Actually the state most like Afghanistan imo is Kansas. There's some really scary fanatics up there and terrorists.

Another thing that's really irritating, especially about the eastern part of Oklahoma, is the way everything is frivolous unless it's country music, then spend all the money you can on it. It's like everything is evil except country music and somehow that's more wholesome and pure. Hardly.

Yeah, OK is all backward and hateful, but, on the bright side, they're stupid too.

Did anybody else catch this story about how they got tricked into providing universal preschool?

http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-a ... transcript

Quote:
Oklahoma is arguably the most conservative state in the country. It's got a Republican House, a Republican Senate, a Republican governor, four out of its five representatives to Congress are Republicans, as are both its senators. One of those senators, Tom Coburn, was named the most conservative senator in Congress by National Review magazine. And if you need more proof, consider this-- Oklahoma was the only state in the entire country in 2008 where not one single county voted for Barack Obama.

So how in the world did anyone get the conservative state of Oklahoma to agree to a dramatic expansion of the state's public education system in preschool, something that many conservatives would oppose? How did anyone get away with that? The answer? Universal public preschool came to Oklahoma not as part of a bold, evidence based campaign. It was snuck in in the dark.

And to give you a sense of just how secretly it happened, consider this rather amazing fact. At the time, Ron Peters was getting his little bill squashed by his own party in the legislature, universal preschool was already in place in Oklahoma. It had been voted into law three years earlier-- voted into law by many of the same people who were accusing Ron Peters of socialism. And what's more, they had probably voted for that law without even realizing it, which is exactly the way that people who brought public preschool to Oklahoma wanted it.

It's worth a listen.

School in Oklahoma is a joke. They believe if they just put kids in school from the day they are born, it will somehow solve every problem the state has! They ignore the poor quality and the fact Oklahoma has something like 500 school districts. It should be 77, one school district for each county. The funny thing is, the Oklahoma ignorant will vote in droves on election day but when it comes to ditching their tiny, inferior school district, they dig their heels in the ground and will not consolidate so it's such a joke. It's like they don't really understand what they are talking about. No wonder so many people call it Joklahoma.

Yeah, there's a lot of dumb people but they exist everywhere.
