There is more to education than just "finding a job." It isn't necessarily all about materialism. Some educated people may reject the materialistic lifestyle.

One of the reasons I traveled so much when I was young is I couldnt stand an empty home, to me it had no value without someone to share it with. where otherwise with unfettered freedom I could see the world and make a living too, and when you don't have much materialistic needs it costs less to survive. "The more you own or possess the more it costs you to keep it." next thing you know your working your life away and hardly ever having the time nor money to enjoy living it. so I can see someone highly educated and in a good paying job not being materialistic, more money to vacation and have fun with, or to invest or save.

Besides, the more materialistic you are the more of a footprint you will leave on our world once your gone.

In the Buddhist tradition

Image

Wanting stuff causes people to suffer. To end suffering, stop wanting stuff.

Which is a bit of wisdom that one might have picked in one's college Buddhism class.

Hang on - "all life is suffering"? Not for me it isn't. Though I'm guessing that's either simplified, or I've misunderstood.

Thanks.. he does a good job of explaining the common sense of the social necessity for religions to keep the social
bonding and social roles of society..IN TACT..AND WORKING..AS WELL AS POSSIBLE..AT THE TIME..enacted...

Overall a balance is required..

It's really not rocket..SCIENCE..

Just an open mind for HUMAN INSTINCT..is really all that'S required to eventually gain balance..

Nirvana ..or Bliss...

If the instructions are not easily found on a desolate pristine beach...

i say BS..

I found my GOD on a beach..and BLISS2..no words..or fancy text..

needed to find the ONE THAT IS ALL for
me..;)

And YAH..BASIC SOCIAL ANIMAL BLISS..

OPEN TO ALL THOSE ones WHO HAVE..EYES OF NATURE..PER MOTHER EARTH..:)

AND THE BALANCE OF NATURAL LIFE.. (not light;)per Beer..;)

LIGHT PER SACREDLOVEISALLITIS...ALLONE!
AGAIN!
:)

Some of the teachings attributed to Jesus are also anti-materialistic in spirit.

Matthew 19 wrote:
Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; then come and follow me.” When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he was very rich.

Jesus then said to his disciples, “I assure you: it will be very hard for rich people to enter the Kingdom of heaven. I repeat: it is much harder for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle.”

But, there is a certain level of spiritual materialism, too: you get to go to Heaven and live it up for eternity.

For Buddha, the goal is to escape Heaven as well.

Some Christians do seem to spend a lot of time worrying about whether they will get into Heaven, and get overly attached to the idea. Some people get sad and anxious, like the rich man described in Matthew.

If you detach yourself from all desires and cravings, then your sufferings will come to an end.
