Its not like in the early 1900's where like in Russia they had food lines, here in America we now have the food stamp card. for all basic purposes the social services given to help support people IS socialism. if we consider that (hopefully) someday the world will be united, there will be people who would prefer a more communistic life stile. and so a mix of capitalism and communism in communities would be preferred. although the capitalist feel those on social service programs are lazy and mooching off their hard earned tax dollars. the thing is with exploding populations and that of industry automating most everything there is rarely ever going to be enough work to go around, so it only makes since to have a base line living standards. secondly when people are so poor most all their lives many starts to lose interest in chasing that all mighty dollar past surviving, allowing them selves to be content with a meager life and life stile.

As time goes on we are seeing more and more assistance programs and more and more people choosing to stay on them as a way of life. so basically we do have a working communistic society within our capitalistic one..

Any thoughts on this?

Breadlines were not uncommon during the Great Depression.

I have no issue with social programs or even communism....though I wouldn't say its necessarily a choice to remain on assistance programs. I am on SSI and it sucks I would like if I could function better and hold a job so I could afford to do more than barely scrape by, of course in a more socialist/communist system perhaps people could do more than barely scrape by if the base line living standard is set up that way which in my opinion it should be. Of course socialism never mixes well with toltalitarianism so the people would have to have proper representation so that bit would be more like democracy I suppose

But not too confident such a system will be created, done being an idealist I guess....just waiting for the collapse now, though the thought of a system like that is still nice.

^Yes socialism is about taking everyones property

Perhaps ignorant gun-toting overly-defensive right wingers should educate themselves before assuming property will be 'seized' or is that guy just on a rant about taxation?

Maybe if conservatives actually took the part of working people, instead of siding entirely with business who have no problem with cutting wages, benefits, and even jobs themselves, there wouldn't be a need for so much socialism in America today. Conservatives seem to forget that a successful, wealthy country owes that status to the well being of all it's populace, not just it's elites. But business wants to increase profits and pay less taxes - as if they would really be poor if they paid their share or took responsibility for workers and their families, and consumers dependent on them. And in all seriousness, if food stamps and other forms of government aid were cut tomorrow, as so many consumers are dependent on them, just imagine how many stores and other businesses would go broke in no time.

The thought of what you good folks might define socialism as, scares the crap out of me. I am guessing that any kind of welfare that is not given by family or NGO's is Socialism. The likes of Charles Fourier and Robert Owen, not to mention Marx would be doing repeated face palms if they were able.

You know what else is socialist? The military, Social Security, public schools, firefighters, police, the interstate highway system, the FAA, CDC, FEMA...

Ah, but the radical right wants to privatize all those things.
