Welcome to This Week in Social Justice, where I discuss the biggest and baddest social justice fails of the past seven days. This week we have the board game Monopoly's feminist take, why the word "guys" is now a no-no, and stick around until the end...there may be a bonus topic!

Even my mother thinks this version of Monopoly is stupid.

It beggars belief that someone could look at this and not realise it is a badly-done parody of feminism.

In the last year or so Monopoly has been aiming itself directly at the sorts of reactionaries who think this is "feminism gone too far". Look at "Monopoly for Millennials" and "Monopoly for Socialists" as similar examples of this, aimed at elderly conservatives who don't know the first thing about young people, socialism, or feminism.

Surely 'Ms. Monopoly' is intentionally terrible, though? Hacky feminism is just an easy way for the company to get attention.

It's not, unfortunately. This is their own marketing:

Original Monopoly sucks.

Why wouldn't every iteration of Monopoly suck? These alternate versions are just geared to get attention, and, judging by this thread, it's working.

I have never liked the original Monopoly. As a kid I would play it with my family, but I'd get so bored and cranky I'd get up and leave the table before the game was over. I've never played any other version of Monopoly and I plan to play this one even less.

What's wrong with teaching kids to buy up everything in sight and drive all of their competition into bankruptcy and poverty?

At least they're not learning to cast spells and worship demons like they would while playing Dungeons & Dragons, right?

So its a version of monopoly that people can choose to buy and play or choose not to buy and play? Not a situation where the entire game has been hijacked by SJWs? Meh it'll probably end up being a flop.

Lol maybe one could argue the makers of this version don't think women can play monopoly and so made it easier for them because they're sexist.

On a more serious note, here is an article from 15 years ago (2004) explaining "What's Wrong with Monopoly (the game)?".

Quote:
... In the game Monopoly, owners of land and houses and hotels, though acquiring their possessions by luck, are flattered into believing they are masters of the universe, extracting profits from anyone who passes their way. There is no consumer choice and no consumer sovereignty. This is not a small detail.  The entire raison d'etre of the market is missing, and thus the real goal and the guide of all production in a market economy...

True it never was a very good/fun game to begin with.

While it is acceptable to attack and debate beliefs (political, religious etc) it is not acceptable to make generalised attacks on the adherents of those beliefs. It is acceptable to say that Republicanism, Liberalism, Christianity, Islam are stupid but not acceptable to make generalised attacks saying that Republicans, Liberals, Christians or Muslims are morons. You could say that some of these people are stupid because of (reason) but not make generalised attacks on groups of people. Similarly you could not say "Christians are morons" or "Muslims are terrorists" or "People on welfare are bums". Confine your attacks to the beliefs and politics, not the people holding them. The one exception to this is public figures themselves – by the very nature of their roles they are personally open to criticism. viewtopic.php?t=204613

This is only a problem when someone takes the game too seriously. It's fun as long as you remember that it's just a game.

"Just a game" -- one in which it is not only important to win, but to utterly crush your opponents one-by-one.
