Which way do you lean politically and why?
I would call what's occurring in Syria a "collapse."
I think what Jacoby meant was that because of the world economy collapsing slowly but increasingly, social and cultural collapses would necessarily follow. We have had the housing and dot-com economic bubbles burst, and are currently awaiting the inevitable bursts of the education and health-care economic bubbles. Whether Jacoby meant that or not, the eventual result will be the same. When enough of the world economy sectors turn into ghost towns, watch for social problems to mount precipitously.

Yeah, but our economic problems are easily solved--either by sensible reforms or bloody revolution. Which we get simply depends on how stupid and greedy the rich people are!
Either way, it will sort itself out soon.
PS
At any rate, I think Jacoby is actually, talking about mexicans... dirty, lazy job-stealers, rapists, drug dealers and all-around bad hombres.

It will sort itself out, I don't think it's going to be a very fun ride but maybe I'm just a pessimist. I would say the cultural rot has already been significant but now we're really waiting for the other shoe to drop. Automation will come sooner than people think and I think it's a lot more likely that it will increase inequality than be a paradise where 70%~ gets to live happily content on welfare and do whatever they want. Even if they were willing and that system was sustainable(it's not currently possible to that extent) I don't think the society that evolved under it would be up to much good. You think about the effects that might have on American workers but it will be even worse for the 3rd world countries, worldwide communism is not just going to suddenly break out.
I think the past gives us a lot of clues as to what the future will look like, Pax Americana is suffering the same fate that befall all great empires. You can have faith, people have found a way before even with their back metaphorically pressed against the wall. I remember a wise man once saying "life... ugh... finds a way" but never mind that. It does but the implications of that don't necessitate that being being a positive development. It's hard to know how to feel about it when you are largely powerless to stop it , don't know how or when it will happen, but still know that it is inevitable.
I would definetly say left because I believe there should be more prevention of corporate crimes, I'm also an egalitarian so I'm definetly all for equal rights, free health care is a must because it's vital to have good health to live a long life with decent quality, and I'm also against mixing religion into politics despite being pagan because it will cause complete tyranny over the people, just look at the monarchs back in the day.
I would have to say I am independent but more favoring in left wing policies, but I also believe in some right wing policies as well.
For instance, I believe in the second amendment rights, I don't like political correctness, and I think there should be some what of a free market with most things.
I am not a social justice warrior, I don't whine and b***h about someone not agreeing with me. I'm definetly not a special snowflake because I don't need to identify my self with things that are superficial like gender identity, feminism, and reverse racism. So don't worry, I don't care if someone is right winged, I just try to keep an open mind with things.
I favor individual thinking, individual decision-making.
Lefties practice "collectivism".
Collectivists think some central government bureaucrat should decide how you should live.

Conservative myth about liberals; but believe as you like.
Could you explain more of what you mean by "Conservative myth" ?
The notion that liberals are incapable of individual thought, but lemminglike follow the groupthink is the myth of which I speak. Sure, liberals have been guilty at times of putting party loyalty over what's right, but so have conservatives.
It's not that lefties are incapable of independent thought, it's that they want control people, so they willfully surrender it to a bureaucrat.
A leftie sees a smoker, and thinks, "We need to control that person. Let's regulate and tax those cigarettes".
A leftie sees someone drinking a pop, "We need to control that person. Let's tax sugary drinks".
A leftie sees car emissions. "We need to control that person. Let's regulate and tax emissions".

None of those things you mentioned are particularly healthy, while car emissions and cigarette smoke can be harmful to others. Public interest is taken into account, and a little money for the greater good is raised through taxation.
As a matter of fact, the right has been guilty of trying to control people, in particular about what you do in the privacy of your own bedroom, and in particular, with whom. The right has tried to dictate to the rest of us who can and cannot go poop in a public facility. None of these things are of a public health concern, but rather, is all about prejudice.

I am more right leaning myself. I find the left and especially the far left to be going a little overboard with claims and wants and needs. The terms "SJW" and "Snowflakes" are used to describe these types a lot.
I tend to browse that part of twitter where there is a clan of trolls on either side and its interesting to watch to say the least as well as 4chan and reddit and it seems these "snowflakes" get busted on pretty badly. I have to admit its a bit comical at times but I digress.
Which way would you say you lean politically and why?
Somewhat to the left of center.

The Left<>Right dichotomy is not fit for purpose, so I reject it except as applied directly to economics.
Liked.

I agree with the "left right" not really fitting into modern day politics.
But best way for me to describe my self using such terms would be centralist.
Economical right leaning, socially left leaning.

I'm definitely right wing. Taken to its logical conclusion, left wing policies give ultimate power to the government. Power is a balance. The more power the government has, the less you and I have. Unlike wealth, power can't be created and there is a finite amount. I'd rather the people have more of it and the government less of it.
