Seems to me that Daniel Jonah Goldhagen betrays his own bigotry. After all, the only reason he hates anti-Semitism is merely because he only associates it with one Nation, and one Nation only, namely Germany. Needless to say, simply because someone is an anti-Semite, it does not follow, per se, that such and such a person is German. Heaven forbid, anti-Semites have to live in fear of speaking their minds, less they be mistaken for Germans!

Anti-Semites come in all colors, shapes, and sizes. And, there are anti-Semites all around the world, on all continents, and in all races. Indeed, there are plenty of Russian anti-Semites and Polish anti-Semites, and anti-Semites all across the Slavic Nations. Also, there are a surprising number of African Americans who are anti-Semites. You would not say that Louis Farrakhan was a German, now would you?

Could you provide evidence that this is his view?
I think it extreme...
Perhaps you went a little too far on this one...

(Daniel Jonah Goldhagen)
Quote:
During early graduate studies, he attended a lecture by Saul Friedländer, in which he had what he describes as a "lightbulb moment": the functionalism versus intentionalism debate did not address the question, “When Hitler ordered the annihilation of the Jews, why did people execute the order?” Goldhagen wanted to investigate who the German men and women who killed the Jews were and their reasons for killing.[4]

Personally, I would like to investigate why the crew of the Enola Gay followed orders also...
Or why the primarily British and Americans bomber crews fire stormed Dresden, a refugee centre with no military value...
Or why the guards of Eisenhower's death camps denied shelter, medical aid, food, water to the German prisoners of war, whose designation was changed so they wouldn't have to be treated under the terms of the Geneva convention, and shot family members who wanted to throw food over the fence to their loved ones...
Or who the people were who surreptitiously implemented aspects of The Morgenthau Plan for 2 years, thus starving to death millions of German citizens...

The problem was not the German people...
The problem is humanity...
Evolution has a lot to answer for...

Why do so many people only see the atrocities of the other tribe and not their own?...<sigh>

:D Soon, the entire history of The Second World War shall come to light. For the most part, there was the focus on German and Japanese War Crimes, and not on the very similar sins committed by the Allied Powers. As far as I am concerned, The Second World War was merely one vast, Land Grab for all involved, both Allied and Axis alike. Nothing to celebrate.

Personally, I've always thought Goldhagen was an ass. He has been taken to task by other historians for his conclusions, particularly concerning his claim that Klaus Von Stauffenberg and the other brave German officers who lost their lives following their failed bomb attempt to kill Hitler were actually themselves Antisemites who would have continued Hitler's racial policies. This is all based solely on the opinions of a single Anti-Nazi conspirator who had expressed this feeling. That hardly means the others felt this way, especially since many of the conspirators had been motivated by what they knew to be the mass murder of Jews and other innocent people. To have a more accurate picture of these heroic men, watch the movie, Valkyrie, even though the events portrayed have been dramatized.

What a shame Hitler wasn't assassinated...

Yeah. The conspirators even had had a plan set into motion where the SS were arrested on charges of orchestrating a coup. Leading Nazis were to be arrested, and if need be, killed. German commanders in the field were told to surrender to the allies in the west. Concentration camp inmates were to be released. But Hitler proved to be alive, and the Home Front defense force switched sides from the conspirators, causing the coup to fall apart. Stauffenberg and some others were lucky to be lined up against a wall and shot soon afterward, as thousands of others, some only remotely connected to the plot, were convicted in a kangaroo court, and hanged with piano wire. Among those that died so gruesomely were Wilhelm Canaris, the head of German military intelligence, the Abwehr, and the Lutheran theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, both of whom were strident Anti-Nazis. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, because of his war record and popularity with the masses, was allowed to commit suicide, after he was threatened with having his family sent to a concentration camp if he didn't take one for the team.
