In 3 months time Trump will no longer be the president of the United States. We can all rejoice that the most powerful position in the world will no longer be filled by a crazy orange man. The question that has plagued me throughout is tenure is: Now What?

Each political party has some major questions for itself and the country as a whole need to address the division.

For four years the Democratic party has identified itself as the Trump opposition party. This has unified its radical and moderate wings, and energized the radical wing. Now that he's gone the party will have to resolve its own deep divisions.

For four years the Republican party has defined itself as the party of Trump. He lost a second election after winning a first election. In the past hundred years the only other presidents to suffer that defeat are: George Bush Sr., James Earl Carter, and Hebert Hoover. Can the Republican party reverse course?

There is a deep divide in this country. Trump made it worse, but he didn't cause it either. Can the country heal its division or do we continue along the same destructive path.

Now What?

The Good:
Some of the more extreme woke and socialist policies does not get done

The bad:
Little gets done in the middle of a raging pandemic, the health system collapsing, and the deficit keeps on exploding to unsustainable labels.
Where the Democrats go is questionable but the Republican Party remains the party of Trumpism because the base of the party is still incredibly loyal and being politicians they want to be reelected and being human they don't want their homes and families threatened.

biden got more votes than any other president in history. But so did Trump. the difference in popular votes is a mere rounding error.- half the populace knowungly voted for further division. I'd be surprised if Biden could do anything to improve that - at best, it won't get worse. I'm assuming he's going to ditch the leftwing democrats and try to win over moderate republicans. .... Bernie 2024 it will be

Well, Trump lost... But who won?

Winners:
- Joe Biden (Duh!)
- Moderates in both the Democratic and Republican parties
- The Planet
- Advocates of Criminal Justice Reform

Losers:
- The MAGA crowd
- The "Hard" Left
- The Christian Right

... this of course assumes that the Republicans successfully defend their Senate majority, which - while likely - isn't certain yet.

That being said, COVID-19 has such a massive influence on everything that it becomes difficult to see the long-term perspectives of the 2020 election until the virus has (hopefully) been brought under control...

Meanwhile, the Christian Left celebrates with other sane people!

Other winners today include:

-people who want an adult to be handling our pandemic
-ballot workers who endured harassment to count the votes
-our sleep schedules

The more radical Trump supporters will go crazy and then the streets will run red with the blood of liberals.
I hate to sound dark, but when you're surrounded by conservative family members and deep in your heart, you're a liberal, when the cat finally gets out of the bag, will they still love and protect you?

Both parties will have to have a reckoning between their centrist and right/left wing factions.
The moderate and right-wing in the Republican party will blame the other for their defeat; the moderate and left-wing in the Democrat party will take credit for their victory. Moderate and establishment democrats will try to create a 'return to normalcy', while the less moderate elements of the party will try to capitalize on the left's electoral and cultural victories. I'm not sure if moderate and establishment Republicans will do the same though. They spent four years enabling Trump and party radicals that I think they would struggle to convince their base that they need to move back to the center.
The right will only descend further down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole. You think there was a disconnect between the right and reality before? The right wing will look to any scapegoat or conspiracy theory before they accept that their defeat was earned and legitimate.

Well, hopefully starting in a few month's time, far fewer people will die of COVID. It's a step in the right direction. Hopefully people off their rocker will finally shut up. I guess even if they don't, there's no reason to listen to them anymore though, so they may as well be talking to a wall. I have no doubt there are Trump supporters who are sane and reasonable adults who will accept that this is one of many elections in their lifetime, and not every one goes their way. That last comment was to the crazies who somehow act like they're on meth 24/7 even though I don't actually believe they are.

In any case, I hope the world will return to some degree of normalcy. Worst case, Trump supporters are perfectly ok with the military being sent in to put an end to protests, assuming the lot of them aren't hypocrites who only think that way if it's against protests they aren't involved in.

I figure it will take anywhere from one to four years until Trump is no longer the star of the show in the minds of many who are both for and against him.

I think in the first year Biden will have such a large workload dealing with all the problems and ramifications of the virus, he won't be able to get to doing much else. He will probably lean heavily on Obama for advice.

Trump starts a new tv show where he pokes fun at Democrats, especially Biden?

Something like that.

He will continue to be the most talked about person on the planet for a long time to come.

That's all well and good, but I was more referring to the direction of the political parties and country as a whole.

Yeah, it would really be best for everyone if we could move on from him. Unfortunately he makes big bucks for the mainstream media, so they'll cover him ad nauseum for viewers/clicks.
