A society that bases its governance on the differences of its people tends to degenerate into an "Us Versus Them" cultural mentality. When everyone is more concerned about their differences than their similarities, lines are drawn and battles begin.

It's a very bad thing.

Burn it to the ground.

I think "identity politics" could have its uses....but I feel there's an overemphasis on it these days.

Exactly, if blacks get civil rights, everyone will be jealous of them and there will be a battle.

Blacks have the same civil rights as whites, in principle]. In practice, it's another matter. The same goes for women, LGBTQs, veterans, the disabled, the very young the very old, immigrants, the homeless, drop-outs, junkies, psychos, schizos, and people who have no college degree.

We all have the same civil rights, in principle, but the practical application of those rights varies from region to region, state to state, county to county, and even from one zip code to the next.

The reason being that our government is not monolithic in demographics, intent, or culture -- it's a mashup of different, and often opposing special interests.

I'll just leave this here

George Washington wanted to end slavery, but never did because he feared it would divide the new nation.

Lincoln wasn't keen on slavery, either----but he sensed that immediate emancipation would have dire consequences, too.

No. He wanted them sent back to Africa.

Bananas are definitely people. I can tell because they don't taste very nice.

Overwhelmingly there is always an "Us against Them" mentality...
Here in Oz between the Liberal and the Labor parties...
And in America, between the Republicans and the Democrats...

Could you elaborate as to why it is a bad thing?
I genuinely want a resolution so I (personally) can move on...

I am fence-sitting atm...

Fnord already said some about it, but with identity politics, you're focusing on something that can't be changed, arbitrary characteristics. And like I said in my "Diversity is not a Good Thing" thread:

viewtopic.php?t=367453

You say one thing is good (diversity) that automatically makes the other bad. The thread title was to expose that assumption before you read my OP. These arbitrary characteristics should be irrelevant. I don't see any redeeming features at all in identity politics. Nothing but negatives.
