She Wants To Be Sworn In On A Quran.
Tlaib is the first Palestinian-American woman to serve in Congress. She and incoming Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota will also be the first two Muslim women ever elected to Congress. During her campaign, Tlaib embraced progressive ideas like Medicare-for-all, a $15 minimum wage, debt-free college, calls to abolish ICE and to impeach the President.
But no, I expect people to only remember that she's a Muslim.
Source: Rashida Tlaib will make history with her swearing-in.
More power to them in choosing the book important to them to use for their swearing in. Ushering in a change in historical procedure as this may be, I would then also support a satanist choosing some satanic book for their swearing in. I would also support someone choosing no book but instead sticking their fingers in their ears and making a gobble gobble or other unintelligible sound they believed represents telling the truth to them.
In regard to the historical rule of no hats or head coverings that will apparently also be changed to accommodate the Muslim women. That's not far enough. I would also fully support and would strongly encourage ANY member of congress at this point, regardless of sex, to wear any type of hat that was important to them. Baseball cap, driving cap, top hat, bowler, porkpie, literally whatever they choose to wear that represents something important to them.
Equality for everyone and equality for everything.

I am sure I am going to have my disagreements with the new congresswomen but she should be sworn in using whatever book she wants to or nothing at all if that is what she chooses. Any law manding the use of the bible is probably unconstitutional state-sponsored religion.

I agree. I'm against any group or person being "more special" than any other group or person when it comes to beliefs.

I was just going to ask; why is swearing in judges on the bible standard anyway? I mean, I know the US has a long history with Christianity, but it also has a long history of deliberately trying to keep church and state (and by extension law) separated.
(I would so be sworn in on a copy of "the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy".)

Mitt Romney doesn't insist on being sworn in on the Book of Mormon.

Muslims, like the Mormons, read the Bible as well as their own book.
Jews stop at the Old Testament.
Christians stop at the New Testament.
Mormons tack the Book of Mormon on to the OT and the NT.
Similarly, the Koran is an add on to the OT and the NT.
All four share the Old Testament. So why cant she just follow tradition and us the Bible?
Seems like unnecessary grandstanding to me.
Of course, I expect our current Demander In Chief to try to make it a law, or to say that the swearing-in is invalid if it isn't made on the Bible, or some other such nonsense. It simply won't work, because the 1st Amendment disallows any law favoring any one religion. Thus, trying to force everyone to swear on the same religious book is unconstitutional -- not that it matters to our DIC, but that the Constitution over-rides both tradition and executive opinion.

Because the Quran ≠ the Bible and Islam ≠ Christianity. By your logic, all Christians should have no problem swearing themselves in on a copy of the Tanakh.
Mormons still consider themselves Christians so swearing on a regular old Bible isn't that weird. A Mormon making a to-do about swearing in on a Bible that doesn't have the book of Mormon would be like an Orthodox Christian having a problem with swearing on a Bible that doesn't have 3 and 4 Maccabees.

Every official in America ALREADY does get sworn in on a copy of the Tanakh. The Tanakh is the same thing as "the Old Testament" which is contained in the Bible along with the New Testament.

I'm sure we'll hear all the outrage coming out of Fox, Breitbart, The Blaze, and every other dispensary of lunacy about her being sworn in on a book that inspired Bin Laden and ISIS. If she swears on the Bible, the same loons will screech about how she's swearing a false oath, as she doesn't believe in Christianity. You can't win with the insane.
