We are Homo sapiens.

Neanderthals, at present, are classified as Homo neanderthalensis----though there was a time when they were considered Homo sapiens, and bore the subspecies neanderthalensis. They emerged approximately 150,000 years ago. They are considered the most cold-adapted species/subspecies of Homo.

Then you have:

Homo heidelbergensis, which emerged about 500,000 years ago or so.

Homo erectus
Homo ergaster
Homo habilis.

Habilis was first---about 2 to 2.5 million years ago. Erectus and ergaster emerged probably from 1.5 to 2 million years ago.

I genuinely doubt that humans will go extinct within any of our lifetimes. I'd say that it's pretty much impossible to predict how long Homo sapiens will last as a species. A nuclear war between superpowers would likely do a pretty good job at wiping us out, but that's unlikely to ever happen due to good ol' MAD.

No, and anyone who claims they know is a f*****g liar.

Scientific Fact

Non-specific speculation. I'll stand by my point, they're able to discuss likelihoods and inevitability, but not specifics. If they promise specifics, (like say, 4 more generations, or 3400 more years, or 'when the Jade Monkey is recovered' or whatever) they'll be lying.

I agree with the last part, but fact is we are a doomed species living on a doomed planet. So many things out there can destroy us forever. :skull:

Hmmm. <ponder>
A planet-killing meteor?
I think we would have to chalk that one up to god cleaning up the mess he has created and pretending it never happened.

Fat chance of that.
Julian Assange will probably release the stuff-up on the WikiLeaks website.

How can anybody determine how long humans will be around?

If somebody can do that----then that somebody would be God.....because no mortal can do that.

It's (obviously) an impossibility.

I AM the prophet! The seer! The oracle! Here is what I see:

A slain eagle with a bullet peircing the left wing and an arrow peircing the right wing.

Two bears: a brown bear and a panda, tearing away at the eagle's bloody carcass

A blue dragon rising from the west and a red dragon rising from the east

The Pacifists fighting The Passionate

Fire and blood raining from the sky

A golden winged goddess of victory holding her lit torch to the sun to judge the outcome of battle

The sun has 5 billion years left in it, so humans will either be destroyed or have to leave earth by then.

We could start a nuclear war and be wiped out in 50 years or we could survive for hundreds of thousands, millions, or even hundreds of millions of years.

I'll bet on human ingenuity to adapt to change and survive most (not all) potential catastrophe's.

People have been predicting the end of the world for thousands of year. AND THEY HAVE BEEN WRONG!! !

Sometimes people act on these predictions and have caused their world to come to an end. An example is Heaven's Gate, an American UFO religious millenarian cult based near San Diego, California. On March 26, 1997, members of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department discovered the bodies of 39 members of the group in a house in the San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe. They had participated in a mass suicide; specifically, a coordinated series of ritual suicides, in order to reach what they believed was an extraterrestrial spacecraft following Comet Hale–Bopp.

Another example occurred in the year 1,000 A.D. France experienced a famine in the year 1000. The cause was rather unusual. The year 1000 was a time of extraordinary suffering, for the whole country was seized with a panic, fearing that the world would come to an end during this the millennial year. Thousands went on pilgrimages, deserting their homes and their fields and obstructing the whole normal course of their existence. Since the fields were left unplowed and unplanted and since the world did not come to an end, starvation set in.

The human race has shown the capacity to survive come-what-may. So off-hand I would say probably 80 million years from now when the next time a fragment of a great Oort Cloud Comet impacts Earth.
