Is there a way to change or get rid of ads?
It seems space that could be used for other is plastered w ads or a TV screen that shows ads.

Nope.

Because TV channels need revenue in order to survive.

I work in media.
For tv channels, the ads are the content, the movies are the filler.

But on a broader scale, economy is built on growth, and 'economic growth' is a euphemism for 'higher consumption'.
Swap those terms and it becomes easier to understand the predicaments we're in today:
advertising is there to foster 'economic growth'.
And 'higher consumption' is destroying the planet.

That's why you can't get rid of ads trying to get youbto consume more stuff, and why economic growth and sustainability are mutually exclusive.
