What happened to the left?

First of all, I must make it clear that I've always been a left-winger. In favour of people and not money over people. I can easily even be considered of the extreme left. So far...
I have observed sadly what the left (in my country) has become in recent years with great sadness. People don't fight for real changes, but for Likes or Followers on social networks, even if for that they have to attack innocent people in the name of something that, for me, has become the new facism. A modern facism dressed as "cool".
Where any divergence is followed by social lynchings. Yesterday my wife (who also considered herself leftist) received a message from an unknown girl. A message threatening her that she should remove her drummer from her band (my wife is a singer) or the band would suffer the consequences having performances cancelled in the city. And what had the drummer done? He threw a HAMBURGUER at the feminist and leftist vocalist of another band without apologizing later. My wife contacted the other vocalist and "victim" and what did the poor girl answer? That if someone messed with a woman then ALL should help her to end the MACHO ESCROTO (something like abusive man in portuguese). That my wife's band should apologize publicly or be ostracized. Now my wife will be forced to remove the drummer if she wants to continue singing in the city. This is just a case of many who do not stop appearing here. All because of a Hamburger in a leftist feminist. And in your country? Has the left also degenerated?

Just look at our Democrat candidates for potus. Nearly ALL of them are radicals, or proposing socialist/radical agendas. While calling anyone moderate or conservative, 'racist'.

A "radical" would be somebody who advocates "radical" change----like overthrowing the government.

None of the Democratic candidates are "radical." Not even Trump is a "radical." He's not even especially "conservative." He's just espouses a sort of "business model," and he plays on the fears of the populace---of immigrants, especially.

The Democratic candidates have liberal-----maybe leaning towards a Social-Democratic model---ideas. They don't come even close to Socialism-Communism as practiced by Marxists around the world.

absolutely agree. There seems to be a whole lot of finding 1 person doing something silly then reporting it as a generalised story in a 'look at the left!' way.

Sadly it seeps into the gullible part of society easily. Just look at some of the threads on WP for example.

Democrats aren't left-wing per se, but center-right. The far left f*cked up pretty badly in Venezuela -- and people do not like being forced what to choose. I'm not saying that the far right is much better, but socialism never worked well anywhere.

you should also note that the radical left has receeded to fight about representation/images. Like the image of a man throwing a hamburger at a woman, or the number of women/diversity of a tv show or film.

whereas the political and economic left has become far more centrist - meaning, politics and economics has moved so far to the right, that policies that are normal in Europe, or have been in place in the US under such marxist hippies like Nixon, are considered radical and socialist in the US today.

When people shout at Democrats for being 'socialists' I think they want others to go 'what?! that's terrible, boooo!' but instead they go 'wtf? have you even a clue what socialism actually is?'

Yep, I find that 9 times out of 10 someone uses the word (socialism) they have no clue what it means It seems to mostly stand for "something I don't like and everyone should agree it's evil".

Kind of like Americans labelling everyone they didn't like as a communist during the McCarthy era?

Maybe instead of getting so depressed about America's insanity I should just laugh at it?

I think it's generally young folk on the internet doing it. What's odd is that no one says it's bad to dislike something if you dislike it, but at least identify what it is you don't like about it rather than read a word on the internet about it and shout that this must be what they are. all the knowledge at their fingertips yet they can't be bothered to look up what the word is that they are shouting.
