The concept of consciousness and spirit is interesting. It's the point where scientists and spiritualists part ways.

The spiritualist perceives consciousness as immutable and immortal whereas for the scientist being conscious is a chemical reaction in our brain neurons.

I perceive it as the bit that happens while I'm not enjoying myself.

Consciousness is one of the things I have difficulty studying and understanding in philosophy. I don't know everything about the human interior, but what I do know, I know a fair bit about; I know about the intellect, the will, the body and its two appetites; I know a fair bit about human nature and the human soul. But when it comes to consciousness, just thinking about is difficult, despite the fact that I'm in it, like a fish in water.

Most psychologists consider consciousness to be a black box that we can't see inside.
