Quote:
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez looks set to waltz to a second term as the self-described Democratic socialist dominated her primary competition Tuesday night.

The incumbent — almost better known by her initials, AOC, than her actual name — rolled to victory, claiming 73 percent of the ballots cast at the polls during early voting and on primary day, with 74 percent of precincts reporting.

Her best-funded opponent — Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, a former Republican and financial news reporter — had nabbed just 20 percent of the vote.

“When I won in 2018, many dismissed our victory as a ‘fluke,’ AOC tweeted as the vote counts rolled in. “Our [2016] win was treated as an aberration, or bc my opponent ‘didn’t try.'”

“So from the start, tonight’s race was important to me,” she added. “Tonight we are proving that the people’s movement in NY isn’t an accident. It‘s a mandate.”

Ocasio-Cortez was expected to easily win the race, in which Caruso-Cabrera focused on her opposition to the Amazon headquarters deal for Long Island City, her far-left leanings as a leader of the congressional progressives and brought renewed attention to complaints she hasn’t focused enough on constituent services.

But her last-minute attack ads on Caruso-Cabrera gave some poll watchers reason to think she was vulnerable.

AOC’s heavily Democratic district covers portions of western Queens, including Astoria and Elmhurst, and the eastern portion of The Bronx.

To each their own, I guess...

From what I have seen of her in the media, she comes across as rather abrasive and condescending...Well meaning, perhaps, but I believe she needs to work on her presentation\people skills.

Mate,
I was being a superficial male here.
And joking around.
She is a very attractive woman.

I'd rather see *her* on the news,
Than the orange man or Biden, some time down the track.

I agree she isn't the best political performer,
But she is young and has time to improve.

Are you implying that she is just like every other politician?

Not really...I've known some decent politicains who talk to people as equals, rather than as though they were "better" than those to who they speak with. I tend to notice that there seems more like that (treating people as their equal) on the right than on the left, but it isn't split along any particular divide (although the further left the politician is, the less likely it is that they would speak to the public as an "equal", and the more likely they would be inclined to talk down to people).

Looking at our recent Prime Ministers, for example, Bob Hawke [1], John Howard, Tony Abbot, and Scott Morrison haven't been too bad (The first from the left, the others from the right of the "political spectrum") in that they appear(ed) to treat people as their equals, whereas Malcolm Turnbull and Julia Gillard (first from the "right", second from the left) were more inclined to talk down to people...I'm not sure where Kevin Rudd (left) and Paul Keating (left) fitted, but I'd probably add them to the list who "talk down" to people. The current opposition leader (Anthony Albanese - from the left) also seems like someone who would be inclined to treat people as his equal, but I haven't seen too much of him. (of course, this is all subjective, and based on memory, which can be fallible...Other Aussies may see (or remember) them differently.)

[1] It would be hard to imagine a Prime Minister, with a world record such as he held, to be someone who would not talk to people as their equal...

I'm not sure why this is unexpected. She's popular in her district even if she tends to make reichwingers heads explode.

Tony Abbott was an international embarrassment who's main technique was LARPing what it meant to be an Aussie, and could not have empathy for marriage equality despite his own sister is a lesbian.

Also, calling women politicians as abrasive is not exactly a good look, since it is like a specific part of a gender bias of the word used by people who see women as such.

So what word would be appropriate for someone who truly believes she's "abrasive?" Please consult your volume of PC terms. I want to keep up with this s**t, I really do!

I am not policing specific speech, providing a thesaurus of approved words so you can say the same thing without getting in "trouble", that would defeat the point.

But it is a proven that people tend to see women who are competent or powerful as abrasive when compared to similar men. It is not about the word, it is maybe understanding a bit of gender bias.

I think maybe the one up point with here is she's one of three or four in congress who are for approval of legalization for psychedelics in medical and psychotherapy settings - I really hope the science speaks for itself and handles most of it. The overall trouble I find is when someone says 'Did you hear what AOC said lately' - it's almost never something I walk away from feeling smarter. It's a bit like Russell Brandt's jokes about George Bush - at least you can say we're accepting.

How did you get that from what I said? I said not such thing that there were "approved words".

Are you that desperate to make yourself out as a victim that you have to make stuff up that you are in danger from a so called cancel culture mob for not using an exact word?
