Democrats Reveal Who Will Speak During The Convention — And Who Might Not

Quote:
The speaking lineup for the Democratic National Convention that kicks off Monday includes a number of party stars that represent the ideological spectrum, ranging from Bill and Hillary Clinton to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Democrats unveiled on Tuesday morning a long list of party leaders and influential voices who will speak during this year's convention, with a mix of both moderate and progressive voices. They'll be featured across four nights of programming.

Democrats had previously announced a plan to also highlight the plight of everyday Americans by giving small-business owners, teachers, factory workers and front-line health care workers prime-time speaking slots.

Monday: Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, former Ohio Gov. John Kasich (a Republican who ran against Donald Trump in the 2016 GOP primary) and former first lady Michelle Obama

Tuesday: Former acting Attorney General Sally Yates, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, former President Bill Clinton and Jill Biden, the candidate's spouse.

Wednesday: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, former President Barack Obama and the yet-unnamed vice presidential nominee.

Thursday: New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, California Sen. Kamala Harris, the Biden family and the presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

Who's missing: They could still get added to the lineup, but some notable Democrats are not in the initial rundown.

They include two women rumored to have been considered as vice presidential candidates: former national security adviser Susan Rice and former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams. (Other possible VP picks are in the lineup, but they could easily be moved into the running mate's speaking slot if they are chosen.)

Several of Biden's primary rivals are in the program, but the roles of other notable candidates remain to be seen, like former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke, former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, former housing Secretary Julián Castro and tech entrepreneur Andrew Yang. Yang expressed his disappointment after the announcement.

Two former Democratic presidential candidates currently in competitive Senate races also are not on the list: Montana Gov. Steve Bullock and former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper.

There were questions about whether Ocasio-Cortez would make the cut, and while she did, other young progressives in the self-proclaimed "squad" have not: Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar and Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley.

Former Vice President Al Gore, the party's 2000 nominee, will also not be featured, while other nominees who lost, like Clinton (2016) and Kerry (2004) will be speaking. Former President Jimmy Carter is also not listed, and he was notably absent from the funeral for Georgia Rep. John Lewis last month.

Hard choices were inevitably forced by the fact that Democrats have reduced their program to just two hours each night, forgoing the typical lengthy program that allowed for many speakers to get time on stage in the afternoon and early evening, before the prime-time headliners.

Last week, Democrats officially decided to turn their convention into an all virtual affair. And it was announced that because of the coronavirus pandemic, Biden would deliver his speech from his home state of Delaware, instead of traveling to the host city of Milwaukee to accept his party's nomination. It was a significant change, but Democratic convention planners had long been prepping for a highly-produced week that would need to be broadcast from multiple locations across the country.

On Tuesday, the party will also do a "roll call across America," in which they'll broadcast footage from all 57 states and territories as delegates officially cast their votes for the Democratic nominee.

I have not read anything about any postponements due to the death of the President’s brother.

Schedule

Quote:
After being pushed back from July due to the pandemic, the Democratic National Convention will finally kick off on Monday, August 17. The DNC has planned four nights of virtual programming, culminating in Joe Biden’s acceptance speech on Thursday, August 20. The televised portion of the event has been condensed to just a few hours of “prime time” programming, set to run from 9 to 11 p.m. ET. Headliners include Michelle Obama, Bernie Sanders, Jill Biden, Barack Obama, and of course, Biden’s running mate Kamala Harris. On Friday, the DNC announced performances by Billie Eilish, John Legend, the Chicks, Billy Porter, Jennifer Hudson, Common, Maggie Rogers, Prince Royce, and Stephen Stills.

Here’s everything you need to know about the convention, and how to tune in.

Where is the convention being held?
At a location of each speaker’s choosing? The New York Times reports:

To add more visual pizazz for viewers, Democratic officials have encouraged their remote speakers to set up cameras in symbolic and visually interesting locations, rather than drab Zoom backgrounds, like bookcases and spare rooms, that are common to cable talk shows.
While some limited party business will still take place in Milwaukee, the convention will be mostly virtual. Both Biden and Harris will address the convention from the Chase Center in Wilmington, Delaware. A Biden campaign official told The Hill that none of the speakers will appear before a crowd.

How can I watch it?
The events will stream online at the DNC’s website, and on social media sites such as YouTube and Facebook. You can also tune in the old fashioned way, on an actual television, but as the New York Times reports, coverage will be limited:

The major broadcast networks, ABC, CBS and NBC, plan to carry an hour of the convention live each night, from 10 to 11 p.m. on the East Coast. Cable news channels will air the two-hour nightly proceedings in full, but the Democrats’ jampacked schedule poses a risk that local affiliates in swing states could cut away at 11 p.m. if speakers aren’t wrapped up.

Monday, August 17th Lineup
Theme: “We the People.” Here’s what that means, according to the DNC:
This country is confronting a series of monumental challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic continues its rampage, tens of millions of people are out of work, and America is confronting the racial injustice that has marginalized too many people. Throughout our history, when we stand united, we can overcome anything. On Monday, we’ll hear from the many Americans who are rising up to take on these three crises, unite our country, and join Joe Biden in rebuilding the country and moving it forward.

9 p.m. ET: Speakers include Senator Amy Klobuchar, Senator Catherine Cortez Mastro, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Representative Jim Clyburn, Representative Gwen Moore, and Senator Doug Jones.

There will also be performances by Maggie Rogers and Leon Bridges.

10 p.m. ET: Keynote speeches from Senator Bernie Sanders and former first lady Michelle Obama.

Tuesday, August 18th Lineup
Theme: “Leadership Matters.” What that means, according to the DNC:

Leadership means rising to meet the nation’s challenges, not making them worse. To Joe Biden, it’s about putting the country ahead of yourself, and taking on the tough fights even when it’s unpopular. It’s about making sure the government—the military, the judiciary, the scientists, everyone—is working in the national interest, not a president’s political interests. Tuesday’s focus is on the leaders and the experts, the veterans and the activists, all those who seek to unite and not divide, and who step up—not back down—from a fight over what’s right.

9 p.m. ET: Speakers include former acting U.S. attorney general Sally Yates, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, former secretary of State John Kerry, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester, and former president Bill Clinton.

Tuesday night will also feature the “Roll Call Across America.” Per the DNC: “We’ll hear from voters, delegates, parents, teachers, small business owners, activists and leaders in the Democratic Party as they officially cast votes to nominate Joe Biden to become the next president of the United States of America.”

10 p.m. ET: Keynote speech from former second lady Dr. Jill Biden.

Wednesday, August 19th Lineup
Theme: “A More Perfect Union.” What that means, according to the DNC:

America is not going back to where it was before Donald Trump’s mismanagement of the pandemic and subsequent economic crisis, because for too many people, that wasn’t good enough. As he leads us out of crisis, Joe Biden will help build back better. He will have a historic partner in these efforts: the first female vice president. On Wednesday, you will hear from the Vice Presidential nominee and many others who are committed to working alongside Joe Biden to achieve his goals to form a more perfect union.

9 p.m. ET: Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Governor Tony Evers, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, and former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Billie Eilish is set to perform.

10 p.m. ET: Keynote speeches from Senator Kamala Harris and former president Barack Obama.

Thursday, August 20th Lineup
Theme: “America’s Promise.” What that means, according to the DNC:

A former public defender, a leading senator, and two-term vice president, Joe Biden is one of the most experienced candidates to ever seek the office. Throughout his career, he has been tested by historic recessions, global conflicts, pandemics, divisive politics, and the never-ending quest for justice and fairness in America. Every step of the way, he has risen to the moment with steady and effective leadership. Being president doesn’t change who you are, it reveals who you are. Joe Biden is a man of character and decency, and of empathy and compassion who believes in America’s promise. On the final night of the convention, we will hear from those who can speak to Joe Biden’s leadership and character. Joe Biden will speak about his vision for uniting America to move us forward out of constant chaos and crisis, and for delivering on that promise for all.

8 p.m. ET: Pod Save America Live pre-show, in which podcast hosts Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, Tommy Vietor, and Dan Pfeiffer will “lead us into the final night of the convention with a look back at the week’s highlights as well as classic moments from conventions past.” Watch at crooked.com/convention.

9 p.m. ET: Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Cory Booker, Governor Gavin Newsom, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, Senator Tammy Baldwin, Senator Tammy Duckworth, Sen. Chris Coons, and Andrew Yang.

The Chicks are set to perform.

10 p.m. ET: Former vice president Joe Biden’s acceptance speech.

WILMINGTON, DE—Joe Biden conceded today that the Republican Convention was "alright," "pretty inspiring, to be honest," and "a real gas."

But Biden says the Democratic Convention is going to be "even better."

"Just you wait -- our convention is going to blow this one out of the water," he said to a department store mannequin. "Man alive, I tell you what: we're gonna have fireworks and flags and all kinds of stuff. That nice, clean, articulate woman of color is gonna be there: what's her name again? It's like the same name as some wrassler: Hulk? Hogan! That's it, Hogan. She's a real swell broad."

It was unclear how Biden got into the department store, as it's been out of business since 2013. Aides located him after putting out an Amber Alert and coaxed him into a windowless van by writing "FREE HAIR" on the side. They were then able to transport him safely back to the basement for storage until the election.

Biden then tried to twirl the mannequins hair but since there was none he beat the mannequin like a drum.
