The report on Trump's taxes is the most conclusive proof yet the President's business empire is nowhere near as successful as he claims.

When he took office, Mr. Trump said he would pursue no new foreign deals as president.  Even so, in his first two years in the White House, his revenue from abroad totaled $73 million.

Between 2010 and 2018, Mr. Trump wrote off some $26 million in unexplained consulting fees as a business expenses.

The Trump International Hotel in Washington D.C., which reportedly asked for relief on rent payments earlier this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, has lost more than $55 million since opening four years ago.  The property has come under intense scrutiny in recent years amid allegations that Trump was unfairly profiting from his presidency.

He's putting the screws to people in the U.K. as well; Trump's golf resorts at Turnberry and Aberdeen in Scotland lost over £11.8 million ($15.2 million) in 2018, company records show, and lost money the previous year too.  Trump plans to lay off up to 80 workers at Turnberry, or roughly 17% of its workforce, and cut salaries and working hours despite receiving UK government wage subsidies during the pandemic.

These facts appear to portray Donald J. Trump as nothing more than an equal-opportunity swindler.

Also, according to the report, in at least two deals (e.g., hotels in Hawaii and Vancouver), Ivanka Trump double-dipped, serving as both a "Project Manager", and as an "Outside Consultant" to those same projects.  In those deals, Ivanka Trump's ad hoc categorization as a 'consultant' allowed her father to write off three-quarters of a million dollars.

This is like saying that a cashier who handled only two customers is a consultant for the entire Tim Horton's chain.

Is this "The Art of The Deal"?

Trump U "gold elite" degree cost $35,000, and you expect us to just fork over such knowledge for free?

The secret is *inflation is your friend*.

1) Borrow money to buy valuable property.
2) Amortize the debt with rental income.
3) Break even is OK. (You don't like paying taxes do you?)
4. Write off expenses. Expense everything.
5) Make your money on an appreciating asset, and depreciating debt (the money you borrowed).

So, at the end of the day, ideally, you have a lot assets that are appreciating, and a lot of debts that are depreciating.

Here ya go ... a PHD from Trump U ...

I'm sure older members here may recall a New York billionaire in the hotel business there famously said "Only little people pay taxes". Her failure to pay them eventually resulted in a stay at penitentiary hotel, which she apparently thought as a fate that didn't apply to elevated creatures such as herself. Her name was Leona Hemsley. Various accounts of her describe a fairly repugnant personality, and Trump launched attacks on her assumptions and character, in the manner (or so it seems to me) of pots and kettles..

Fascinating; read about it here - I will award prizes for spotting the parallels (no I won't!)

Leona Helmsley and Donald Trump both wanted/want to make clear distinctions between themselves and people they claimed/claim were/are inferior in some way (Helmsley: "Little People"; Trump: "Losers").  Neither Helmsley nor Trump were/are any better than the people they disparaged.

 (Stupid verb tenses ...)

Well, I can't blame Trump for his tax evasion schemes as a citizen.
I can. Under normal circumstances I'd call his actions illegal. Apparently he actually found legal loopholes though. But, legal or not, it's still reprehensible. When people like him don't pay their taxes, that's a lot of money that doesn't go to the government or the economy. It's why the rest of us can't have nice things, and why some are even struggling to get by.

I'm with you on low income families being screwed over, but that's only because people like Donald don't do their part and pay what they owe. It's true that it's unfair that such a loophole only exists for rich people, but screw them regardless if they take advantage of it.

I'm not American by the way, but although I'm also with you on hating tax season, I think it's my duty as a citizen of my country to fill out my tax returns.

I also find the whole concept of rich person "debt" appalling. Who else can go into debt and still live lavishly? Apparently one can be considered "wealthy" in spite of technically having negative dollars, and actually technically having a far worse net worth than even the vast majority of people who are in crippling debt. It just requires having been rich before going into said "debt".

I use quotes on the knowledge that Donald will actually have to pay his debt, but heck if he didn't get away with not doing so for so long, and he was even able to rack up more and more as he went along, in spite of having already been in far greater debt than should have been allowed in the first place. I want to be part of the upper class. Where can I sign up? 8)

You put that degree on your resume you have disqualified yourself from roughly 65 percent of companies.
