I've been looking in to something called the conservation of angular momentum which states that if a spinning object breaks apart in an environment without friction and then breaks apart all the parts that break off will spin in the same direction. So if the universe began as a swirling mass. How come 2 planets spin backwards (venus and uranus) and 6 of the moons spin backwards???
I don't fully understand this but it does seem to tear holes in the big bang theory.

Big Bang: 13.8 billion years before present.
Formation of Solar System: 4.5 billion years before present.

The two are completely separate events divided by 9300000000 (9.3 billion) years.

you're confusing the universe with the solar system.

The Big Bang is the supposed origin of the whole Universe.

The "swirling mass" thing has to do with the origin of the solar system (just a flyspeck upon a flyspeck upon a flyspeck sized part of the Universe).

The Universe started with an explosion at a singularity.

Billions of years later our solar system coalessed out of swirling mass of gas and dust.

The fact that some bodies in the solar system rotate retrograde does not disprove the swirling gas model for the origin of the solar system. The bodies might have originally been spinning in the same direction as everything else in the solar system, and then gradually flipped over in orientation and are spinning in the same direction but are upside down. And there are other possibilities like bodies being struck by asteroids causing a reversal in spin direction.

Also this should be in science and not in the PPR.

We live in a very chaotic system. Objects are colliding with other objects. Even our moon was thought to be the result of such a collision of two planets size objects. If you look at the surface of our moon you will observe many impact craters. Some of these impacts will alter angular momentum.

A good example in two dimension space is a game of pool. Pool players will often put a spin on the cue ball when they strike it. They are essentially using angular momentum to control the spin of the cue ball and also imparting spin to the ball(s) they strike. See Applying spin to the cue ball

I was prepared to vote against but pleasantly surprised that this was actually about cosmology, not television.

The OP hasnt responded to her own thread yet. So ...the cosmology topic is now dead.

So...

Lets all switch to talking about the TV sitcom of that name! And, in true PPR spirit, start throwing brickbats over it!

And that show has been a bit of a hot button topic on WP.

So...you are of the anti BBT camp?

Explain.

I don't like TV series in general.

Maybe there was a Big Bang maybe not. Currently most cosmologists support the Big Bang theory, but this could change in the future if evidence is found that goes against the Big Bang.

It seems more plausible than alternatives that rely on gods, magic sky faeries or the universe being danced into creation by our ancestors.

How about a witch and a coconut?

I honestly think the Big Bang was caused by Phil, construction worker aged 44 from West Wendover, Nevada.

Apparently, he ended up constipated for 3 days straight after binge eating some bad chili con carne, and when he finally had to go.... then he *really* had to go...

The universe is just one of those stains in the rug that you try to clean, but just keeps getting bigger, and bigger. :(

Unless it also includes a lion and an armoire I'm not buying it. :nerdy:

"Sir Roger Penrose, a mathematician and physicist from the University
of Oxford who has just shared this year's Nobel Prize in physics, claims
our universe has gone through multiple Big Bangs, with another one coming in our future.

Penrose received the Nobel for his working out mathematical methods that proved and expanded
Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, and for his discoveries on black holes, which showed
how objects that become too dense undergo gravitational collapse into singularities – points of infinite mass.

As he accepted the Prize, Penrose reiterated his
belief in what he called "a crazy theory of mine"
that the universe will expand until all matter will
ultimately decay. And then a new Big Bang will
bring a new universe into existence."

Never heard of that. Maybe you mean "witch hazel", and coconut. Or lime, and...
