What's painful to me is not only the change of the law - I'm rather pro life but in a pragmatic manner, not at a cost of other tragedies - but how they react to the protests. Our current government calls to "save real Poland" from "those who are destroying it"... sounds familiar? Yeah, cut your society in half and call one half to fight against the other - sounds familiar?

Yeah, sorry, I'm immoderate right now. It's all happening while covid is gaining momentum and unofficial data shows much more deaths than the confirmed ones - likely, a lot of Poles choose to avoid doctors and hospitals and die at home. The official data is published with some 6 weeks delay.
And who will be blamed for this? Obviously the "rioters" because what's wrong with making extremely controversial legislation in the middle of an outbreak?

It's similar to the Vietnam-era policy of destroying villages to "save" them -- just an excuse to kill people.

Poland has made our (US) news, which is pretty unusual. I have been thinking of you in the middle of this turmoil.

Please don't harm yourself. I understand the urge. Resist it.

Thanks.
Things are peaceful where I live but... unfair. Deeply unfair and damaging, on more levels than just the new legislation - these ***** *** guys first started a massive anti-LGBT campaign, now this abortion thing - in effect, the unhealthy polarization of society grows and escalates and instead of finding solutions people are fighting each other...
Meh.
Sounds familiar?

Lol. I just read an announcement from the District of Education urging to "take preventive measures" against "using children" in promoting "LGBT ideologies" during

Rainbow Friday

An LGBTQ acceptance event.

Great. Without that announcement I would have no idea about the event - I don't hang out on f***book or t***r.
My children are probably too young to get mixed into it but I'm willing take part myself 8)

I have heard what has been going on in Poland and it sounds like a horrible country to be in if you are LGBT. Yikes. 8O

This might be a bit of a tangent, taking it into something I am more familiar with, but a YouTube channel I watch called Curio recently released a series of videos on the Witcher franchise, not just the series but a lot of focus on the games and especially on the original novel series, both of the later being Polish. The videos made a lot of points of how Poland has been going a certain way now, but The Witcher series was one that leaned very heavily into themes the women's right to choose, and acceptance of diversity. And that it is sad that the country of origin of this series was becoming what it is.

Sorry if the only thing I can relate is with a fantasy series from there.

Polish culture is complex when it comes to ideologies.
Strong catholicism is accompanied with just-as-strong anticlericalism and long tradition of tolerance (being "they're heretics and sinners but it's neither my nor the state's business to do anything about it").
Current government appeals only to some fraction of the society, allegedly the new legislation had 13% support and 59% opposition in general population. But the group that took the power seems not to care as long as there is no elligible way of stripping them from their power :(

Well, I hope that that there will be a strong reinvigoration against the political party, which I have heard is fascist, and that in the long run good will come of it. Keep on rebelling, don't let people get complacent over the rights of marginalized groups being stripped away. Hopefully the 59% opposition can be a rallying call that the Polish people are more.

They certainly don't identify as fascist.
The most common opinion in my social circles is, they are a Catholic-clerical version of the communist party from the previous century. And corrupt.

A Catholic/clerical version of the communist party seems a contradiction in terms. No wonder they are unpopular with so many Poles. This kind of ostracism always frightens me. I never know who is next on the list. (This is a childhood fear; my parents were friends with people who still had numbers tattooed on their arms from WWII.)

May grace be with you and your family.

I didn't go to protests because of the pandemics.
I bought a box of colorful chalk and went drawing rainbows.
I didn't want to engage my children but my younger daughter wanted to go with me.
I ran out of chalk too soon.

I might not be super-woke but our current government has crossed a boundary that I find fundamental: dehumanisation.
Calling living human beings "disease" and "ideology" for this one percent point to win an election.
I've been dehumanized on ideological basis. I've been living in lies, fear and confusion of conditional acceptance. I've been living pretending to be someone I'm not.
I don't want anyone to experience it.

I just drew rainbows and wrote "you're loved". My daughter, when I explained her the best I could what I mean, drew rainbow-colored two men holding hands... I don't want her to get engaged in things that divide people in such an early age but that's what she understood: there's no reason to hate someone because of who they fall in love with.
