Supposedly the Russian army is hiding the amount of casualties by burying their own soldiers in mass graves and reporting them as missing.

I listened to some fb watch videos that said Russian soldiers were shooting themselves in order to be injured enough to be shipped back home as cargo “300,” - wounded, and then not have to join the fight. Some are shooting each other for this reason, some others are shooting and killing themselves instead, and some are shooting their commanding officers.

Looks like morale is pretty low and they’re getting out of this any way they can - while also using social media to warn others not to come join the war.

None of this can be good for Russia’s plans to replenish the front lines or make any further major attacks.

..unless putin decides to start pressing buttons. Never know. Apparently he has some kind of blood cancer and is undergoing some kind of surgery that necessitates putting his second in command in charge temporarily. If the guy is dying, and Also crazy thanks to his mind + disease + medications etc, then ya never know.. he might just be crazy enough to do it. If so, then the big question is is whoever receives that command crazy enough to carry it out… ?

The chain from "the red button" to actual launch is said to be rather long, so hopefully someone sane can be found there.

I hope so, because I can see Putin getting very frustrated with the way his war is going. He might be tempted to go all out and drop a tactical nuke on Kyiv to be rid of Zelensky once and for all, especially if he fears he won't live long enough to see the end of the war by conventional means. He might hope Ukraine would then capitulate under threat of more tactical nukes and job done. NATO probably still wouldn't intervene risking an all out third world war with nukes for everyone.

There`s alot of war propaganda coming from both sides that you have to be careful of. Even a site i initially recommended back in feb - live map ukraine, i found is run by two Ukrainians so not to be trusted with map accuracy & news for an impartial view of the military progress.

I found another site Defense Politics Asia ( a Singapore based site ) that seems more impartial just slightly pro Ukrainian but to be more trusted about accuracy. Propaganda is all well & good for morale but i prefer to know what`s really going on.

If there is propaganda coming out from the Ukrainian side, what could the Ukrainians possibly say about the invading army that is worse than reality?

Finland confirms it will apply to join NATO

May 16, 2022

Finland’s President Sauli Niinisto has officially announced the country will apply to join NATO.

A formal membership application from Finland is expected to be submitted to NATO headquarters in Brussels next week.

The move is prompted by security fears over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The nation shares a border with Russia that stretches over 1,300 kilometres.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently warned Mr Niinisto that abandoning Finland's traditional policy of military neutrality to join NATO would be an “error”, according to a statement from the Kremlin.

But it seems that Putin is able to get people to do what he wants by propoganda alone. I mean the way the Russian government is wired, he could have his cellphone connected to launch nukes, possibly?

But also, I doubt Zelensky is hiding in Kyiv though, as that would be the first city Russians would look for him?

Russians are far less powerful than they appear. They did not manage to assassinate Zelensky. He's not hiding, he's doing his job with additional protection. There are likely anti-nuclear bunkers in Kyiv, back from Cold War era, it would have been reasonable to have them restored. It's likely the president uses them every time there's a missile alarm, I think he was there 24/7 when fights were active around Kyiv.
Lots of Western leaders have traveled to Kyiv and met with Zelensky in the meantime. He's there.

The chain from "red button" to an actual launch is long for technical reasons. There are no automatic launchers. The warheads are stored separately from the missiles. There are a lot of technicians required even if the command chain was completely bypassed.

Wonder how long that's been the case, maybe since the Presidency of Eisenhower?

Has that famous fabled "military industrial complex" of profiteers and Generals all these decades pushed "Danger! Danger! Soviet Russian military is almighty!" propaganda on us in the name of job security and retirement funds?

Throughout the decades where I've had enough awareness of such things there have been occasional voices arise who have said the threat is overstated but those voices have seemed to be soon plowed under.

Oh, Russia is definitely very dangerous, I think we are seeing a very obvious proof for it.
Their actual might... I think it varied over time a lot, while a facade of a superpower was always maintained.

why would they want to hide the amount of casualties? Wouldn't putin want to use this as an excuse to justify sending more troops in?

Because knowing the likelihood of becoming "200", people do whatever they can to avoid fights.
Individual Russians have instinct of self-preservation.
Also, the families of the "200"s and everyone solidary with them can mount up to a serious political power.

Another reason why China is unlikely to act with Russian tactics.
