Is JW similar to Calvinism?

As I understand it. Jehovah's Witnesses are a far out theology not really akin to any other Christian sect.

They are comparable to the Mormons, though not particular akin to them either in theology (but as far out as they are).

No, calvinists believe in predestination and the trinity.

Originally, JWs sprang off of the Second Day Adventist movement in the late 19th century and “developed” from there. If you ask JWs, they will claim that they are just like first century Christians. They don’t think they are like or related to any other religious group.

They are similar to other fundamentalist groups as far as theology is concerned. Their core beliefs aren’t THAT unusual but their rules about shunning and blood transfusions really set them apart.

They are a doomsday cult but other fundamentalist groups believe in Armageddon, too.

I've visited loads of cities in the UK. They seem to all have JW's with their book stands trying to spread the word.

I would say 'exercising faith' is totally the wrong thing to be putting in john 3:16

John in the children's bible chapter list is john the Baptist. The John of john 3:16 is a different person, just a disciple.

I wouldn't mind seeing how the children's bible translated it out of curiosity

Speaking of which ...the Mormons actually ADDED a third testament to the Bible. The Book of Mormon.

I am sure the Book of Mormon beats out ANY translation of the first two testaments of the Bible in sheer entertainment value. Its gotta be good for laughs.

Its basically about how Jesus crossed the sea, and began to travel throughout precolumbian North and South America preaching to the Indians. And it just gets whackier from there.

It is hysterical! I read the first few chapters and the introduction. It is so silly AND badly written.

I think in some ways Mormon beliefs are stranger, but they are less extreme than JWs with the hurtful stuff, so that’s something.

Maybe they are more standard Protestant Fundie than I thought. But they have some odd, and rather inane beliefs. Like how Christ wasnt crucified on a cross, but on a vertical stake. And how Christ and the Angel Michael are one and the same. And they are more specific in their Doomdayism than are most Fundies. Their prophet predicted the world would end...in the year 1914. The world didnt end, but the First World War DID start that year. So you might forgive folks of the time for thinking "close, but no cigar. So try again" so he tried again, and again. But the world just kept failing to end on his subsequent deadline dates.

I knew about the predestination and trinity.
I thought maybe JW believed in predestination but I guess it's different.

I had that "Love is patient" verse read at my wedding, along with EB Browning, Kahlil Gibran, and Shakespeare.

Interestingly, the church founder got the idea from Adventist Movement leaders, I believe, who were making end of the world predictions in the 19th century, so even here, he doesn’t stand out that much. He was big into numerology. He mishmashed various scriptures together to get to 1914. (He made predictions before that but 1914 aligned nicely with WWI, so followers took it as proof.) I think originally he was saying that Armageddon would come then but he decided to go with a more convoluted version (2.0) when the war was drawing to a close.

I find their emphasis on a stake rather than a cross hilarious. It just doesn’t matter because in both scenarios Jesus is dead. Cults love to obsess about insignificant details that, ultimately, don’t matter.

I think you're looking for John the disciple. He is described as the disciple Jesus loved...and he is the one saying to rely on faith.
