people can't seem to understand freedom at
all. Probably comes from being in a country which
was handed it, rather than having to fight for it.

Not according to Alex. Unless he's been
swayed away from the liberties which
he espoused. Really, these veiled threats
ought to stop.

So should you. Because you seem intent on pushing the envelope.

And look what happened to the PPR forum! Do you want a flaming cesspit, or actual intellectual debate?

But, unless public warnings are now the norm (and
I don't dispute this might be best) the actions that you are conducting
are NOT within what is acceptable. My understanding is that flame wars
were to be cut apart, which pretty much kills them. It's
an ugly thing to do though, and should ONLY happen in the
very worst cases. No warnings - Ignorance and fear.

Where as you have ripped it into shreds with that laying down the law post.

For what? Calling the mods on what I did privately?

No, I'm sorry. This site is a COMMUNITY. You serve at
Alex's pleasure. You don't make the f*****g rules here,
as much as you try to impose your ideas of what is right
and wrong. And I'll fight against what I see as an attempt
to move against what his wishes are, whenever I see them.

IF he's changed his mind, he damned well ought to let the
membership know, and not leave his mods to attract all the
fire. But, given what I've seen in the past here, I'd rather guess
that this is yet another mere usurpation of power.

If you want freedom to be an idiot, go to Intensity. Otherwise, be civil and intelligent, I know you are capable of it.

How about you follow your own advice. Calandale has beaten you here, admit you made a mistake and move on...

I don't believe that I've been uncivil ONCE here.
Not in all my posts. I also STRONGLY doubt that
Alex is now in favor of squelching dissenting voices.

Hell, the reason that I left the staff here was because
I believe that I can serve his stated goals better from
the outside than I could when I felt that I had access to
privileged information. Too big a moral quandary. But
you'll have to pull out the banhammer to silence me, and
I suspect that you're a tiny bit too squeamish (and as I
remember to enamored with your little bit of power - a
sign that troubles me greatly) to use it in a situation where
you are so clearly in the wrong.

Alex never gave the mods power to ban anyone without his permission. The last time one of them decided to "knock a few heads together'' as he put it, Alex was mighty displeased. In fact the mod in question was forced to publicly apologize to the membership for doing what he did.

What's the point of having a mod if they can't take action against posts that they deem offensive? Alex indeed has the final say but I can't see that Quatermass is doing anything wrong with stating his rules. He isn't threatening to ban people - just telling them to watch what they post.

This is a bit fuzzy. First, there certainly is
a right to ban the obvious spammer. But,
there are other things which can be done
to really damage the site. Still, it has to
be something so obviously threatening to
warrant such action by a mod.

Uhm, to protect the site from REAL threats?
But yes, the mods do have some responsibilities,
it's just supposed to be a very light touch, as Alex
has been burned by bad decisions by mods before,
AFAIK

Quote:

You know, I'd pretty much agree that this is
a good policy (though the execution was a bit
arrogant for my tastes), but for the fact that the
site owner has expressly told the mods NOT to engage
in such. Now, if this policy has changed, if the mods are
working as a good unit, with utmost trust and respect for
one another, and these decisions are carefully weighed,
and written, so as to cause LESS trouble than the problems
they seek to eliminate, it might just work.

However, I think that Alex has had some experience here
which has led him to believe that aspies simply don't like such
authority, and intrinsically rebel against it. Oh, not all - but
enough that reasonable liberties should be allowed. Again,
maybe I'm being conceited in thinking that cleverly worded
statements could defuse situations better - but do remember
that the mods are neither paid, nor selected for any particular
talent in such matters. So, it is no wonder that sometimes their
wording is such to anger - and not in the correct manner.
