3
If you overesteem great men,
people become powerless.
If you overvalue possessions,
people begin to steal.

The Master leads
by emptying people's minds
and filling their cores,
by weakening their ambition
and toughening their resolve.
He helps people lose everything
they know, everything they desire,
and creates confusion
in those who think that they know.

Practice not-doing,
and everything will fall into place.

The Mind of Absolute

To have been cast in this human form
is to us already a source of joy. How much
greater joy beyond our conception to
know that that which is now in human
form may undergo countless transitions,
with only the infinite to look forward
to? Therefore it is that the Sage rejoices
in that which can never be lost, but
endures always. For if we emulate those
who can accept graciously long age or
short life and the vicissitudes of events,
how much more that which informs
all creation on which all
changing phenomena depend?

The five colors
make a man's eyes blind;
Horseracing and hunting
make a man's mind go mad;
Goods that are hard to obtain
make a man's progress falter;
The five flavors
make a man's palate dull;
The five tones
make a man's ears deaf.

For these reasons,
In ruling, the sage
attends to the stomach, not to the eye.
Therefore,
He rejects the one and adopts the other.

Know masculinity,
Maintain femininity,
and be a ravine for all under heaven.
By being a ravine for all under heaven,
Eternal integrity will never desert you.
If eternal integrity never deserts you,
You will return to the state of infancy.

Know you are innocent,
Remain steadfast when insulted,
and be a valley for all under heaven.
By being a valley for all under heaven,
Eternal integrity will suffice.
If eternal integrity suffices,
You will return to the simplicity of the unhewn log.

Know whiteness,
Maintain blackness,
and be a model for all under heaven.
By being a model for all under heaven,
Eternal integrity will not err.
If eternal integrity does not err,
You will return to infinity.

When the unhewn log is sawn apart,
it is made into tools;
When the sage is put to use,
he becomes the chief of officials.

For
Great carving does no cutting.

I'm a Hui-Qu Nihilist.... i.e. a Nihilist / Taoist cross.

If it puts things in context, I think much of the Tao Te Ching... but I relate more to the Zhuangzi.

Afterall... the very man who wrote it, while Taoist in some sense, is far more sarcastic and absurdist than Lao Tsu... much as I am. He will say one thing one moment, the complete opposite the next, just to press that neither side makes any more sense than the other.... and that thinking about it is pure triviality.

And when you really think about it... the Tao cannot be a "thing"... it is more of a non-thing... Nothing... the Nihil itself. It cannot be named because it is not "there" in any conventional sense, as it is the lack of "thing"... and beyond definition. The beginning and end of all transient forms is in destruction, dissolution and dissociation. It is around us and throughout us. Existence is merely a flittering, demiharmonious chaos in the midst of the greater nothingness.

Hi SotiCoto. :)

I've been compared to a nihilist for a long time now,
so no worries. Mother Nature never cared for the rules of men,
so I'm there with you.

Hi SotiCoto: This is a very untaoist, unzenlike response.
take it as a friendly comment from a friend. If I am as ignorant about nihilism as most people are about anarchy and chaos, then I am way off base and offer advance apogies.

There are nihilists who find meaning in nihilism, and nihilists who find no meaning in anything (which is why they are called nihilists). I trust you are one of the former. Peace.

Ah... :oops:

I meant I don't believe in labels.
I'm not like the nihilists that want world destruction
or anarchy. I work forty plus hours a week, I work out regularly,
I find time to instruct the ignorant, and also try to help others in
need. It wasn't my intention Bobby1933 to implicate myself as
a monster or future cult leader. In whose eyes is zen considered
appropriate?

I was wondering what this all this Taoism was about. I've always found philosophies of Budha quite helpful in everday life.

Can't say I totally agree with a nihilism since it is like anyother man of religion or "human" way of holding one's stance higher than another for power. I believe Hitler was a good example of that.
