Since Trump dominates the conversation in this forum as well as in News and Current Events, what will we talk about when he’s no longer in Office and we have a typical President (not bad but also not great)?

Just about every conversation becomes a conversation about Trump, including this one.

I could probably post a news story about the price of chicken, an alien invasion, or a recent sighting of the Loch Ness Monster, and they’d all become conversations about Trump in the end.

I dislike him as much as the next person, but what will we do when he’s no longer President and goes back to running casinos and starring in reality TV?

I'm not saying this facetiously: If a democrat is elected to replace him, then we'll hear 24/7 about how godlike he or she is. The next messiah to lead us out of emotional misery. He/She will do no wrong. The comparisons will be frequent: "Look at how Messiah is handling that issue. Trump was the opposite.", etc. Yes, there would be slight pseudo-criticisms of the amazing leader to appear to be balanced, but there wouldn't be any true criticisms and they're certainly wouldn't be any vitriol no matter how bad the person might be in leadership.

It will be easy to tell if the above happens since it's easy to get stats at the percentage of positive vs. negative media for someone. I think Trump is around 95% or higher negative in the media so we'll be able to see the percentages of positive vs negative for a democrat president in the media.

I guess the bottom line is that they'd still be talking about him a lot but in comparison to whomever takes his place.

I think he’s almost too easy to talk about. It’s like one can just stop thinking and complain about Trump instead. It’s sort of like thought stopping.

I’m not saying that this always happens and I’m not pointing a finger at anyone because I’ve been guilty of it myself.

Assessment of the damage and plans for how to repair the damage left in his wake seem like two viable topics.

Capitalism, isn't it wonderful?
Good news: rich are getting richer
Poor people have it too good
Trickle down economics works
Tax cuts on the wealthy creates jobs
If you're poor, then you only have yourself to blame

We would complain about the Democrat, too.

I was here when Obama was President. I didn’t see too much hero worship of him.

Just the usual conservative/liberal battles. And these were pretty good ones.

It will be tough, people may be forced to look at themselves for a change. That's never fun, most avoid it by pointing fingers at the shortcomings of others.

Trump. He will still be tweeting, making news, triggering people.

Ive been on this site since I don't know when (joined sometime back with the years were in single digits), and we all found gigantic amounts of stuff to have vitriolic arguments about before Trump ran for office. So that's a dumb question.

Folks bashed Obama, and folks bashed W.. Folks still bash and trash Obama on this site.

If this site out lives the Trump presidency (the future of both is an unpredictable - and either could end soon, but both could live on for another decade) then we will return to having a variety of things to debate instead of having it center on just one person.

The POTUS always has an outsized effect on public discourse even in the wide world outside the US. But Trump is an unusual POTUS who garners an unusual amount of controversy, and that's largely by the president's own design: he strives to be divisive on purpose.

That's actually good to hear that people were able to be freely critical of past Presidents on WP including Obama. I was part of an antique collecting forum some years back and any critique of Obama's leadership was met with accusations of racism by some on the forum. In other words, accolades for Obama = good. Criticism of Obama on any topic = verboten. I'm glad that apparently didn't happen here.

It’s not a “dumb question.”

He makes up such a large portion of our current conversation, especially among certain members’, that it’s hard to imagine filling that void with something else.

People did complain about Obama but not nearly to this extent. He didn’t give us as much to complain about.

Just a few off-the-cuff guesses...

How nice the New Mexican immigrants next door are.

How clean the air and water are getting.

How easy it is for anybody to acquire housing, medical care and a good education.

How dull and boring Twitter has become.

How great the view is now that the wall is gone.

Worsening ethnic and religious tension throughout the West. The potential split of the USA. The collapse of globalisation. China and Russia making a real attempt to shove the US out of their spheres. Remember Trump is a symptom, not the cause.

Is that how they refer to Meghan McCain behind her back?
