By Dana Milbank
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- "Okay, so Florida, you know that you're going to have to hang onto your hats," Sarah Palin told a rally of a few thousand here this morning, "because from now until Election Day it may get kind of rough."

You betcha. And the person dishing out the roughest stuff at the moment is Sarah Palin.

"I was reading my copy of the New York Times the other day," she said.

"Booooo!" replied the crowd.

"I knew you guys would react that way, okay," she continued. "So I was reading the New York Times and I was really interested to read about Barack's friends from Chicago."

It was time to revive the allegation, made over the weekend, that Obama "pals around" with terrorists, in this case Bill Ayers, late of the Weather Underground. Many independent observers say Palin's allegations are a stretch; Obama served on a Chicago charitable board with Ayers, now an education professor, and has condemned his past activities.

"Now it turns out, one of his earliest supporters is a man named Bill Ayers," Palin said.

"Boooo!" said the crowd.

"And, according to the New York Times, he was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, 'launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and our U.S. Capitol,'" she continued.

"Boooo!" the crowd repeated.

"Kill him!" proposed one man in the audience.

Palin went on to say that "Obama held one of the first meetings of his political career in Bill Ayers's living room, and they've worked together on various projects in Chicago." Here, Palin began to connect the dots. "These are the same guys who think that patriotism is paying higher taxes -- remember that's what Joe Biden had said. "And" -- she paused and sighed -- "I am just so fearful that this is not a man who sees America the way you and I see America, as the greatest force for good in the world. I'm afraid this is someone who sees America as 'imperfect enough' to work with a former domestic terrorist who had targeted his own country."

"Boooo!" said the audience.

so...anyone else think that this persistent lie about obama being linked to terrorists will get him killed?

if so, do you think those who perpetuated the lies (palin, mccain's staff, etc) should be held at least partially accountable for what essentially is slander that results in a fatal act?

I think you're reaching a bit with this one, if someone were to take a shot at Obama, race seems to be a far more likely motivator than associating with 60's radicals. Even if someone were to go after him for that reason, holding Palin responsible is a bit much, she's trying lose him votes, not his life. There are always zealots out there, remember why Reagan got shot?

creating the perception that he's a raghead terrorist seems much more likely than simply that he's black.

the more recent and fiery hated minority is more likely to get him killed.

perpetuating the lie saying the he's an arab terrorist and trying to make any connection to him being associated with the word terrorist seems like it'd be much more inflammatory and much more dangerous.

They're not calling him a "raghead". You can bet that if McCain had friends like these, Obama would be pointing them out. Obama associates with a lot of shady people. And one of Fannie May's CEO's worked for Obama's campaign. But every time anyone points these things out, they are labeled as racist.

Proposing that Palin is right; Obama is a terrorist and hes being allowed to run for president.

Then something is very wrong with America.

Proposing that Palin is out her gourd, or outright making up lies(And these I believe).

Then something is very wrong with America.

He should sue her for defamation of character. It smacks of the communist witch hunt of the 50s.

From my perspective up in the great white north, Puritanism is alive and well in America and still trying to burn witches.

Conclusion?

Something is very very wrong in America. Each generation just finds a new type of witch and it starts all over again.

Cant you exorcise the ghosts of those damn Puritans? They've been possessing you for 300 years!

These witch hunts serve a purpose. All I have to do is accuse Jack Thompson of being a communist...

trouble is most people are not too intelligent and many will believe that he is a terrorist. From what I see here in OZ you only have to be muslim and your a suspect. This guy has an Arabic name, part of which is HUSSEIN and now we find out that he has been associating with home grown terrorists, as well as being a n****r* . Remember that the average IQ of 100 does not make a person particularly smart and there are plenty below that level of intelligence.

It would not surprise me if someone had a go at him. Palin probably hasn't thought this through, after all see is not particularly smart either, one the other hand maybe she has, as well as not being smart she also is not very nice.

Defamation of character is kind of the norm in a political race. Because if either candidate were actually honest about their records and the issues, neither would get elected. It's pretty sad.

Well, he is friends with a terrorist.

I hope nothing happens to him. That way I don't have to worry about my penpal from Afghanistan.

and i've been friends with rich people, poor people, low-lifes, high society.

your associations depend on what interaction there is.

the terrorist in question is a former hippie who's now a socialist professor (surprise surprise). and their interactions were relatively brief in comparison to palin's associates and more recent associates (including the african witch doctor).

While saying he's a terrorist is going to far, he IS an Arab- His father is half white-Arab and half Native African. His mother is white. By general genetic review, he's only 1/4 Black, a bit low for the media to go and play the race card. His father is half Arab slave, and half Arab slaveholder; While this has nothing to do with him politically, I figured this should be thrown out there.

i'm not denying he's part arab. i'm stating that constantly connecting the two will drive some dumbass hilljack to kill him because he'll believe with all his god-fearing heart that obama is an al-qaeda operative and must be stopped from taking over the country and eliminating our freedoms.

Think nothing of it. I just thought that was some information that everyone should have, as it gives validity to claims that everyone has brought up. I would hope that Senator Obama has a good number of armed bodyguards. With the amount of insane racist people, (read: deep-south-ain't-ever-been-told-to-not-shoot-black-people hillbillies, and a fair number of active gang members) and the amount of not-nearly-as-insane political radicals, he may have his hands full with both is upbringing and his inherited traits (but you can't help that, right?).

It is starting to get a little crazy this past week with the anti-Obama sentiments. Even McCain is getting taken aback by this now. Their attacks are starting to attract the radical stupid people who believe any rumor about Obama. Most of time I would expect them to stay out of the spotlight, but saying these kinds of things right at rallies with Secret Service present is getting pretty bold.
Which really leads me to wonder, do the Secret Service take these people aside and question them? They damn well better be.
