Whoa. Sounds shaky.

7.8 is pretty strong.. I'm guessing it's done some real damage to older buildings/structures built without seismic safety in mind.

Hope people are as Okay as they can be, given the circumstances.

7.8 is a VERY strong earthquake.

An earthquake that was only Magnitude 7 (Richter Scale) killed a few hundred thousand people in Haiti in 2010.

Whole areas totally destroyed.....most people who don't experience this have little conception of the impact this has on people.

However, many buildings in Haiti are poorly constructed, even the Presidential Palace was severely damaged.

Almost the same time as the Haiti quake, there was a 9.0 quake in Chile, but only a few hundred were killed. Chile has some of the strictest building codes in the world.

I would venture a guess that many of the structures destroyed in Turkey weren't "constructed well," either.

There was a 6.4 where my daughter lives in Cali back in December .
Not so much damage because of building codes etc
So sorry for the folks going thought that right now.

I would not say poorly constructed, as if they were in an area which in the past did not have that many big earthquakes in their lifetimes, then they would have just built accordingly to what they believed would have worked, but if they had regular severe earthquakes like Japan has, they would have built pagoda style buildings instead or another design that would work. The issue is that such events can come in rare severity which may only happen every few generations of people. The first generation or two may build cautiously, but if nothing happens the next generations would not be so cautious. Not build quality. Build design is the issue. Can have top build quality but not designed for the area one is building them in.
