Trump administration pauses $175M in funding to UPenn over trans athlete policy

Quote:
The Trump administration is pausing $175 million in federal funding to the University of Pennsylvania over its transgender athlete policies, the White House announced Wednesday in a post on X.

The post said the Ivy League university's policies are "forcing women to compete with men in sports" and ended with the Trump tagline, "Promises made, promises kept."

A spokesperson for the University of Pennsylvania said that it is aware of media reports about the suspension but that the university has not received any official notification or details.

"It is important to note, however, that Penn has always followed NCAA and Ivy League policies regarding student participation on athletic teams," the spokesperson said in an email. "We have been in the past, and remain today, in full compliance with the regulations that apply to not only Penn, but all of our NCAA and Ivy League peer institutions."

President Donald Trump signed an executive order last month prohibiting transgender women and girls from competing in female sports.

The order, which referred to trans women as men, said having trans women and girls compete in women's sports "is demeaning, unfair, and dangerous to women and girls, and denies women and girls the equal opportunity to participate and excel in competitive sports."

The order also stated that "it is the policy of the United States to rescind all funds from educational programs that deprive women and girls of fair athletic opportunities, which results in the endangerment, humiliation, and silencing of women and girls and deprives them of privacy."

Penn made national headlines in 2022 when a transgender student athlete, Lia Thomas, competed on the women's swim team and went on to become the first transgender woman to win an NCAA swimming championship.

The Trump administration's announcement Wednesday follows investigations it opened last month into the University of Pennsylvania over Thomas' participation and San Jose State University over a player's participation on the women's volleyball team. The San Jose State student has never publicly commented on the controversy or confirmed that she is transgender.

A senior White House official told NBC News that the Trump administration paused the funds due to Thomas' participation, referring to Thomas as male and condemning her access to the locker room. However, the official said the federal funding pause is not the result of the Title IX investigation launched by the Education Department and that the funds were paused by the departments of Defense and Health and Human Services.

The official described the funding pause as an "immediate proactive action to review discretionary funding streams to those universities." The official did not clarify what the discretionary funding is for or why it was being paused if not due to an alleged Title IX violation.

Even if you completely disagreed with trans rights, that is such a negligible issue for them. Barely any anti-trans person is affected by trans rights other than the garbage they spew on conservative news. This is sooooo not a real issue to them. How many of them are female athletes losing to trans women compared to how many of them are suffering at the grocery store, with rent, or their retirement accounts tanking? This is just so pathetic. "I would have won the gold medal at the 3rd NCAA meet in my sport this season that 99.99% of the country doesn't even know exists, but a person that used to have testicles won and that's unfair because I wanted to win because I'm the best. Call the President!" They just want to hate.

I think it has happened in certain cases where certain male athletes have cheaply become trans to compete in Womens' sports in what is tantamount to Fraud. At the same time though, I don't think this sort of thing is anywhere close to the biggest issue or should dominate discussions, and all this has been the most low-hanging fruit of low-hanging fruit.

I think though the only way women's sports like women's basketball are even watchable for any kind of large-scale fan audience and they can get eyes on it is to have some spectacle like this where some athlete like Juwanna Mann is unfairly inserted and is dunking on the other athletes and is smashing them up, and by-design to get a lot of public attention on these events that I don't think hardly anyone would watch otherwise, like women's swimming or the WNBA.

You'll be relieved to learn that it's not true, in any way, shape, or form. It's not cheap, it's not quick, it's not easy, and there isn't enough money or prestige in women's sports anyway. It's a scare-mongering story.

Also, there are no trans athletes in women's sports at Penn. None.

This is all about whipping people up into a fury. Maybe that way people won't notice that everything is more expensive, all the supports are disappearing, and the U.S. has lost its position in the world, possibly forever.

Seriously though, even if there's not a ton of "prestige" or a lot of hype and stuff in stuff like women's collegiate swimming, it happens a lot where just getting the scholarship is a goal for an individual who I don't think would be able to get it otherwise, and in this decade I just don't think even being trans or dressing as the opposite gender has the same stigma it had in decades past, and I don't think it's the same level of barrier for someone to become trans and go and start competing something where the aptitude gap is enormous where a mediocre male can go and start crushing women in something like women's powerlifting.

I am in agreement though, this issue and the level this gets used to hype people up in this low-hanging-fruit kind of way is completely absurd, even though I definitely think it does happen where it gets manipulated to get scholarships in sports where the potential for this crossover is enormous and powerfully-built men crossing-over would easily crush it like in Track-and-Field or Powerlifting.
