Prince Charles would think it would make a marvellous idea for cellar to house his "excess" wine (poor fellow has been using his $1000 bottles as biofuel for his Aston Martin).

In general, used shipping containers are fairly inexpensive. They can be modified for including doors and windows to allow access and ventilation. False walls can be constructed in the interior to run electrical wiring/plumbing/insulation. Without insulation they can be hellish to live inside because they can become unbearable hot in the summer. The exterior can also have foam insulation installed on the exterior. Although the exterior walls are made of a thick metal, they are not designed to support excessive weight, such as burying them in the ground. The four corners can carry excessive weight but not the rest of the walls and ceiling. They have a tendency to cave or buckle in. To get around this, often they will pour a reinforced concrete slab over the top to distribute the weight.

They are fairly indestructible. So I wouldn't worry about the homeless destroying them, unless they started a fire inside. The floors of the contain are wood and will burn.

Most probably wouldn’t—but the hard-core mentally ill-drug addict might. Some might seek to sell the container material for scrap money to feed their habits.

This is realism.

I suspect there would be some stipulations in place to prevent selling the container, also from the look in some of the pictures they would be stacked into more of a building anyways...someone would certainly notice if someone was trying to scrap out their container.

Some hard core more mentally ill drug addicted may need more like a treatment facility than a shipping container unit though. But yeah sure there is the risk a more unstable person could cause damage to a unit, but then again they are supposed to be cost efficient so presumably it shouldn't be too devastating if a few trash their unit.

They would have to be extremely cost-efficient.

If it's more cost efficient than having them remain in the streets in tents, then that should be sufficient that said I don't think that would be as big a problem as some would be concerned about. Desperation brings out the worst in people a roof over your head does a lot to reduce that.

To be clear, I was saying they sound like a good idea. 8)

For many years now, I have been watching the tiny house movement. I get emails from time to time about new ones. So I see this as an extension of the tiny house movement AND therefore really support it because the idea, the size, etc. are already used by "regular" people. We are not creating some creepy storage place for the homeless. I like that.

Everyone should have someplace to live. And the tiny house designs make it possible for a very nice home to be made with just a few hundred square feet.

They are called 'Terrace Houses' over here. 8)

First they get the homeless to voluntarily go into the shipping containers. Then one day they close all the latches and truck away the containers and put them on a container ship. Carry it out to the middle of the ocean and sink it.

There’s a couple sites with stacked shipping container housing for homeless/hard to house pplin Vancouver. AFAIK they’ve been a great success. People have homes, cheap/fast etc. There’s a building manager and social workers that make sure the places don’t get trashed/become a magnet for criminal activity.

Real estate varies a lot here. Some people rent <100sf bedrooms or even just a couch to sleep on in a divided living room, others live in 10-20k sf mansions.

I live in a fairly typical suburban house in a decent neighbourhood. 3 person household, 3200sf on a tiny property.

They can be simple or elaborate.

Their appearance reminds me of the "Cubist" movement of the early 20th Century...

The only people burying shipping containers here are growing/manufacturing drugs in them. Never heard of anyone burying one for any other reason.

I hope these container-based housing pods are well drained / ventilated / insulated. One of the heritage attractions I volunteer for keeps spares in old shipping containers. Condensation is a big issue.

Yes ventilation would be mandatory. I recall working in a small demountable office for 1yr which was half the size of a shipping container. It used to have significant problems with condensation, air quality, heat/cold.

Houses don’t have root cellars here. Almost none. I’d imagine there are not very many root cellars near sea level where it rains a lot.
