S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley signed a voter ID bill into law May 18 that will require voters to present a photo ID at the polls in order to receive a ballot. The governor was joined by members of the General Assembly and grassroots activists from across South Carolina at the Statehouse in Columbia when she signed H 3003 The Voter ID Bill.

“It’s another great day in South Carolina,” Haley said. “The reason it's a great day is because we continue to improve South Carolina in terms of integrity, accountability and transparency. This new law is very important, not just for South Carolina, but because I have heard from people across the country about how impressed they are that we took it upon ourselves to secure the integrity of our election process.”

“If you have to show a picture ID to buy Sudafed, if you have to show a picture ID to get on an airplane, you should show a picture ID when you vote,” the Governor continued. “There were a lot for people that made this come together – and I want to thank, in particular, grassroots activists from around the state, House Speaker Bobby Harrell, Senator Harvey Peeler and State Rep. Alan Clemmons.”

Supporters of the legislation say it will prevent fraud at the polls by assuring that the proper person votes. Opponents, however, say the new legislation will make it more difficult for the elderly and those who do not drive a car to obtain the proper documentation.

Although Haley signed the bill, it does not take effect unless it is approved by the Justice Department. Previously, South Carolina residents could vote by showing a voter registration card which does not include a photo.

House Speaker Bobby Harrell said, “Today is a victory for everyone in South Carolina who has been working to eliminate fraud and make our state’s election process more secure, especially now since the United States Supreme Court has held Voter ID as constitutional. With the bill becoming law today, I hope the Department of Justice will move swiftly in granting our state’s secure election law the same preclearance they gave to Georgia’s Voter ID law last year. That way all South Carolinians can go to the polls this next Election Day knowing their vote has not been compromised.

It is very, very difficult to get an ID. Even a non-driver ID. My roommate let his ID expire due to avoidance issues, and has finally gotten it back after four years. They almost didn't let him get it at the DMV because he had no proof of residency beyond our first years' lease (our second year, the lease was less formal and not on paper). Our utilities are included with rent, and he has no bank account because his ID was expired and he couldn't open one. That's just the last bit of it.

Honestly, it is ridiculous. I don't think that there are huge numbers of people presenting falsely at the polls. Getting and maintaining an ID can be prohibited by issues of money, time, and stress.

my ID was stolen...I am having to jump through hoops to get a new ID...I keep coming up with the same problem, not the right documentation. My Birth certificate was stolen too, and my military ID is expired because I moved away to an area that did not have a base in that state at the time it expired. I have to have a photo ID to get a birth certificate, and I have to have a birth certificate to get an ID. :wall:
So does this mean that because someone stole my information, that I should not be allowed to vote???

There are bigger problems with the election process than voter fraud...called diebold voting machines that automaticly change the vote as they did in FLA in bush's first "term".
You know I read of raw story that they sent those machines to mass. and the next thing you know, a very democrat area suddenly had a neo-con senator to replace Ted Kennedy. And they loved Ted. To me, THAT is voting fraud.

I wonder where the diebold machines are going this election???

Sorry to start a rant on your thread, John, but even though I dont always agree with you...you are still my favorate right-winger.

There is nothing wrong with requiring positive ID. In some localities the dead vote early and often.

giggles......I am sorry not to be serious, but the mental imagery of the living dead voting early...kinda tickled me. I dont know why.
But yes I can see where that would pose a problem for democracy. Another problem in voting is when city officals move the voting stations to anouther location without notifying the voters. I seen this happen in predominately black districts.

Then who's to say... THAT YOU'RE REALLY JOJOBEAN?!?!?!?! WP FRAUD! WP FRAUD!
No, seriously; the whole idea behind behind demanding picture ID at the polls is to stop people who are younger, poorer, maybe blacker - that is, people who are more likely to support Democrats - from voting.
