Let's please not do that again. No damage, at least; just shattered nerves.

I felt that. I assumed it was a truck or something...until it lasted for about 15-20 seconds. Earthquakes in Maryland? Pehhh. Doesn't happen.

And the thing is that ones that hit east of the Rockies can be more destructive than the West Coast/Alaska quakes because buildings aren't designed for them.

And this is just days before Irene is scheduled to strike the Carolinas.

Only 5.8? Pfft!

That's just a "Didja feel that?" quake 'round these parts.

...

Seriously, though ... a 3.5 is scary enough, especially in the middle of the night. I can't imagine how you easterners got through a 5.8 without a fresh change of underwear.

Everyone in my office noticed it. I was focusing so intensely on something on the computer I completely missed it. Sat puzzled as everyone jumped up excitedly and started talking about it. Aspie Fail.

Welcome to my world. I live in Cali where they happen all the time (but most are too insignificant to feel). Glad to hear that damage is minimal, even if there are frayed nerves. You guys will be ok. :-) Though ya never quite get used to the earth shifting.

Do you guys have a fault line where you are?

Earthquakes are very unpredictable. They can happen anywhere at anytime.

Another pffffft from the West coast. ;)

We had a 6.8 here about 10 years ago. No one died and no buildings or bridges collapsed.

A 6.8 is 10 times the amplitude of a 5.8, and about 30 times the energy released.

Most earthquakes here in Oregon happen off of the coastline
and are too small to feel.

I remember the 6.8 earthquake well enough.
I was in class during the time and everyone freaked out.

Most of the damage from that 6.8 was in the Seattle area.

Here in Portland, most people in my class didn't believe
me or the teacher when he said it was an earthquake.

It was about a 3.2 or a 3.4 here when that 6.8 hit.

Are you referring to the Northridge earthquake in 94? Because some buildings did collapse, & some people died. Maybe it wasn't a big toll for casualties, but we didn't get out totally unscathed.
