Did somebody tell these Greenpeace protestors that Russia had nice, Scandinavian-style jails? That's what they get for going into somebody else's country and trying to force-feed them their values.

They do not tolerate dissent there, especially not from foreigners.

Russia is no cosy liberal democracy.

Green Peace/Whale War=Terrorism
No vigilantism allowed to save the homeless? Well then no arse-head is gonna wave signs and/or money to bomb Japanese whaling vessels to save some tastey ocean cows. That's bull. I agree with Putin, "just a bunch of anarchists Gorbachev, a bunch of anarchists".

You are right. Prior to the 1905 disturbances, Russia was incontestably a patriarchal monarchy, meaning the king inherited the entire country as his personal property from his father. As such, Russians were legally nothing more than guests in their own country, and had corresponding rights. Things were far worse under the communists. What I'm getting at is that authoritarian government is simply part of Russia's culture, and we shouldn't interfere there any more than we should interfere with China's government. Live and let live.
