I feel so sad at hearing that news. He was a true innovator, and an inspiration to thousands of musicians.

Oh no :'( That's really sad news - i always imagined he would live forever..
He will be missed by me, no doubt about it.
Saddens me to say i will never get to see him perform live on concert anyway.. :/

I'll send a thought to him whenever i listen to his songs, and each time i watch Frankenstein (1931), since i find Lou to look a lot like the Frankenstein monster :')

R.I.P Lou

A shocker. 71 is not that old. I guess he smoked and boozed a lot and did a lot of drugs, but he looked strong.

Doesn't this belong in Arts/Writing/Music?

On topic: this is terrible news. This man was one of the pioneers of alternative music. What he did with the Velvet Underground was groundbreaking. Very ahead of its time. You probably know how specialists say "the VU had few fans, but all of them started succesful bands later". Velvet Underground and Lou Reed were just very ahead of their time. And solo he was equally groundbreaking with albums like "Berlin" that are now considered to be epic masterpieces. Again he was ahead of his time.

Not only he will leave behind a lot of songs that will still be listened to in a century time (thinking of Venus In Furs, Perfect Day, Walk on the Wild Side ... to name just a few that most people know) ; his legacy also will live on in the bands inspired by him. And those are very very large in numbers, a whole generation of alternative rock saw a lot of bands or singers admitting Lou Reed to be one of their main inspirations.

He will never be forgotten and his songs will live on forever.

He made a big effort to look after himself after he met Laurie Anderson. Strict diet and t'ai chi. However, when I saw him live a couple of years ago, he looked very ill then.

I know everybody is irreplaceable, but he he really was.

I guess now's a good time to dust off my Lou Reed Discography. Thanks for the memories, Lou.

Listening to Perfect Day now. It sounds so differently knowing he's gone. It used to be a signature song of a legend, now it feels more like a masterpiece that was left behind for future generations and that will assure he won't ever be forgotten. Like a museum piece, but one of incredible beauty.

One thing that really struck me was watching him play live in David Bowie's band when Bowie appeared live on Saturday Night Live back in 1979. Klaus Nomi and Joey Arias also appeared, and Bowie was wearing Klaus Nomi's costume.

Also FWIW, a few years ago an acetate appeard for sale with a bunch of records in Lower Manhattan. That Acetate turned out to be the Acetate master for The Velvet Undergrounds Sceptre sessions, which were long thought to be lost. --Some of the songs on it were the takes that appeared on the Album, but there were many alternates as well. --You can download it legally here

i was very sad even though im not a rock and roller.the VU's third self titled "the velvet underground" is my favorite all time pop/rock album with:

pale blue eyes
begining to see the light
what goes on
candy says
all great songs.

there was also a album released after the velvets break up with old outakes, that had a song called " stephanie says" my favorite all time pop/rock song
