Richard Shoop's body was found at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday in an obscure part of Westfield Garden State Plaza mall, hours after he fired at least six bullets without striking anyone in the massive shopping center.
He acted alone, authorities say.

He seems to have wanted "Suicide by Cop", in that he targeted ONLY the walls and ceiling of the mall.

That seems most likely.A few years back a man here cut a hole in the roof of a pawn shop,armed himself and then waited for the police to come.He didn't shoot anyone,but made sure that he got shot.

I don't see the rationale (using this word very loosely when referring to lunatics) in suicide by cop. There's a good chance you will get shot up but survive, and then get locked up. And you forced a cop to shoot you, which is in itself an act of assholishness. Makes much more sense for these people to blow their brains out in their own home.

when a person's at the end of his rope, he can see no "rationale" or whatever you wanna call it, all he sees is an abyss that he has but one escape from.

Well ... escaping from the Abyss by diving headlong into it is THE most irrational act that I can imagine.
