Is anyone else, apart from me, confused by the massive celebration of the success of the D-Day invasion of Europe by mostly American and British troops, alongside the massacres which are continuing unabated in Iraq, Syria and northern Nigeria etc?

Yes,while it's right that the heroism of those who took part should be appreciated and remembered,I feel a little uncomfortable with the scale and triumphant mood of the celebrations. The veterans themselves always act with dignity,it's the media that seem to go over the top.

We got lucky - it could all flare up again at any time...

I guess this is to be expected from youngsters educated in today's schools where they don't teach history anymore.
The Nazi regime was one of the most evil to ever walk this Earth.
We celebrate D-Day because that was the turning point in WWII for us.
Ask some Russian about the war, they'll tell you why they call it the Great Patriotic War.

Meanwhile, listen to a veteran of D-Day.

Why exactly are you 'confused'?

What are you 'confused' about?

Beating Hitler is one thing.

Current troublespots in the World are something else.

Why does one negate the other?

It was the beginning of the end of WWII.

We try to persuade ourselves that D-Day was the final sacrifice, it saved the civilised world, and from then on the world has only got better. Not true.

I was impressed with the speech from President Obama, I was REALLY impressed with the 90 year old veteran who did a parachute jump onto the same landing site that he hit seventy years ago. Heroes, every one of them.

I feel that it's a very important thing to celebrate. We have our freedom because of the men and women who fought in the second world war.

Think about it: how would Aspies fare in the Concentration Camps?

Only a complete idiot would say that. The world has been filled with wars since then, but not one that engulfed almost every country. The wars going on now are terrible, but that in no way negates what happened 70 years ago.

Were it not for Dr. Hans Asperger, they would have been sent to their deaths, starting with the doctor's subjects. Like a real hero, he protected them from being "put to sleep" by the Nazis.

I am not a complete idiot (some parts are missing). The sacrifices of D-Day did not save the world, they just changed the power structures in our favour.

And the power structures which were established after D-Day are currently under severe strain.

I am happy to believe that the allied troops who died on D-Day believed in what they were being asked to do. Maybe that's what's been missing from all the subsequent wars involving the Western Powers.

That's true.

I was thinking along these lines, though: What would have happened if Hitler were able to take over western Europe and North America? How would Aspies have fared in THOSE concentration camps?

We would probably have invented Rocket Science.
