Plus her period would have stopped, which was what had first alerted my wife to her pregnancy years ago. I have to wonder, why didn't she realize that her monthly visitor wasn't coming around anymore?

A lot of women have irregular or absent periods for a variety of reasons. I have a common endocrine disorder (PCOS) and once went an entire year without a having a period. Generally, I have 4 or 5 a year. Sorry if that's TMI, but you did ask! ;)
