This story should aggravate anyone who is sick of government wasting tax money:

http://newsok.com/article/5409282

This high rise county jail was completed in 1991 and it cost 52 million to build. Now the sheriff is determined to tear it down and build a new one. He plans to accomplish this by having the people approve a county wide sales tax increase just for the new jail. A couple of inmates just made another hole in the old one and were going to escape but the hole is still really small. Every time an inmate tears up this old jail, the sheriff's PR goes on a media crusade about building a nice, new, expensive jail for inmates to tear up meanwhile schools and roads are deteriorating. It's aggravating. Why do these inmates need a new jail especially since there's no money for more important infrastructure repairs? Doubt it's even put to a vote but if it is, no doubt there will be a media campaign about how everyone's in danger unless the jail gets built. This old jail was completed in 1991. It's not that old!

just because it's not old doesn't mean it's any good.

$52m is peanuts.

That jail's nickname is The Money Pit. It might be a crappy jail but they are the ones who built it and inmates will tear up a new one like they do this one.

It is incumbent on the public to operate a safe, sanitary, humane jail regardless of the objective quality of the inmates.

If the present jail has problems, they should be fixed. Which means renovation or replacement.

Just because a bad building was expensive to construct doesn't make it a good building.

If you want to talk about wasting money on a new prison - the utah state prison in bluffdale is perfectly good but the land it sits on has appreciated in value significantly over the last 30 years or so.

So developers have convinced the state to build a new prison somewhere else and sell the land.

Government = Waste
More government = More waste
Less government = Less waste

Now back to the jail.
The article does not cite any specific issues with the building itself, just civil rights issues. You can have civil rights issues in a new jail just as easily as the older one. It seems to me that a building should remain serviceable for a lot longer than 24 years. If it's too crowded then add on to it.

Or just do it like Maricopa County and use tents.

The county might have outgrown the jail. I don't care if they build a new one just not at a time when the economy is on a downturn like it is now and they still have roads and schools that need attention. They want to increase the sales tax when the retailers are taking a hit on low oil prices. I read in today's paper there won't be a vote this year. Use the sales tax to repave all the main streets in the county then if there's something leftover build a jail. My tires get flattened on horrible roads, some of the worst in the nation, while those felons get a brand spanking new jail? We should expect better.

Whenever people are in jail, all they want to do is piss and poop all over it because they loathe being in it in the first place so they want taxpayers to fork over 150 million dollars so inmates can piss and poop all over something's that's new and expensive instead of something that's old and already been excremented on. The public knows.

Sheriff Joke's prisons are poorly run. Very unsanitary. Lots of accidents. Very high mortality rate.

Around here prisoners are responsible to clean their own cells.

Also if your economy is still in the crapper, what's wrong? Where i live it is visibly booming. Construction everywhere you look, etc.

You get brownbacked or something?

It's not completely because there's not enough oil for it to be complete. Peak oil has done passed for this state. They do a lot of fracking for natural gas and these natural gas companies are losing a lot at the moment.

Yeah oil is the only resource on earth that's unlimited, and there can't be a peak if it's never ending...
[/sarcasm]
Also, it should be noted that the peak oil theory was concocted by a Shell scientist, Marion King Hubbert. Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean that it won't eventually.

As for prisons, how about we stop imprisoning people for non-violent crimes, that would significantly reduce prison population and thus the cost of prisons. Stop privatizing them as well, then we can cut out the middle man who's profits derive entirely from overcharging the taxpayer for their services.

If it were up to me (a hard hearted and evil conservative) I'd put an end the war on drugs. Not that I condone the use of illicit drugs, but the war on drugs has proven itself to be an unwinnable and corrupt war. Of course it won't end in the foreseeable future (if ever) because there have been too many powerful empires built around it.

You're a libertarian, not an evil conservative which is significantly different. It's like gluttony and overeating, one is a deadly sin the other is merely bad for you.
