how many here can afford the American dream? i'm still not sure what exactly it is, other than being rich. i'm not there, although I surely know people who are [and somewhat smugly so, I might add ].

"The American Dream" is crock of s**t. The sooner everyone realizes this, the better off we'll be.

I think the commonwealth dream or the northern european dream are at least as good in terms of upward social mobility.

It's not about buying something. It's about building a foundation so your kids can do better than you. Maybe you only live in a small apartment saving for their college education.

How exactly do they define "The American Dream"?

They added up the costs of owning a home, car, and paying for food/entertainment for a family of four.

That's not the American Dream as I understand it. I wrote a paper on this in college. It's about upward mobility. It's like an immigrant driving a taxi, saving money for their kid's education, their kids become doctors and the family joins the middle class. The property is just incidental.

I wonder if price ceilings would help the dream be realized for many. I think inflation is one of the main culprits, as well as home hyper-appreciation rates.

I thought it was becoming whatever you wanted to be, including rich.
THIS American dream sounds better realized in Europe, where the tap water is drinkable and consumer safety is higher.
But it's ver very hard to become a disruptive tech billionaire, a black president, or a hollywood star here.
In Europe, we don't have dreams, we have social security, high taxes and free education.
If that's what Americans are dreaming of, ... You're invited to come over.
But listen, the self-driving car won't be a European invention.

I want a mansion with servants, and a garage full of cars I admire but never drive.
