The "Nutty Professor" was arguably a character with a number of Autistic traits.

Yep. He was a pretty good comedian. I saw many of his movies. His son, Gary Lewis, had a bunch of hits in 1965-1966 with "Gary Lewis and the Playboys."

he got royally screwed over by the American muscular dystrophy association who no longer wanted his services when he tried to tell them about a cure.

IOW the association wasn't really that interested in a definitive cure as it was a bona fide threat to their business model. the telethons were big business for them. Lewis was disillusioned, to say the least.

he found some scientists who found an experimental treatment for Duchene's muscular dystrophy. the MDA wanted no part of it.
