Jim Nabors, better known as Gomar Pyle, has died at 87. Everyone I grew up watching on TV are passing away, it seems.

It's "Gomer".

So it looks and sounds like his brother "Goober" .

Yeah. Sad. Another part of our Boomer childhood goes.

Jim Nabors shared some of the rare pathos doled out to characters of The Andy Griffith Show, particularly when Gomer's recruitment to replace Don Knotts' Barney Fife's expected tenor solo in "The Song Festers" episode of Feb. 24 1964. I enjoy the few episodes showing the vulnerabilities of Gomer, Barney, Otis and Aunt Bee especially.

This arrangement is just a wee bit over-produced, but the man had operatic quality pipes. In light of his eventual coming out (and marriage), the second verse is especially poignant.

I remember that episode where he first sang, and it caused me to drop my jaw in surprise that such a glorious and powerful voice came from him.

That's very sad news. He played two very funny characters.

Two?

He played the same one character in two or more shows. He played Gomer Pyle (the young civilian guy, and brother of Goober Pyle, in Mayberry NC) in "the Andy Griffith Show", and then he played the same character in the spinoff "Gomer Pyle Show" as that guy after he left home to join the Marines.

He definitely had one of the best male voices I've ever heard.

I thought he had died a long time ago. Mainly because of that Simpson's episode in the 1990's where Mr. Burns orders Smithers to "begin the thawing of Jim Nabors".

The only reason I remember him is because he was once a guest on The Muppet Show.

I'm sure he is, despite the fact that the fundies and holy rollers probably don't think he is, all because of who his biology and genes caused him to love.

Oh, yeah. I remember watching his show when I was a kid, so he was no spring chicken.
