There've been at least 3 so far this year.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/02/01/us/schoo ... index.html

Why is this such an American phenomenon? :?

Personally, I think it's more of a numbers game than anything & these are the numbers that matter:

Quote:
That's 89 firearms per 100 residents, making the U.S. the No. 1 country for gun ownership. Canada, on the other hand, ranks 13th on the study's list, with 9.95 million firearms — or 31 per 100 residents. Moore is right that Canada has a far lower rate of firearm homicides than its neighbour to the south.May 26, 2014

More guns, more gun problems. Seems like there's a direct correlation.

But still, this particular gun violence phenomenon seems to occur significantly more in the USA than anywhere else. Why? :? Geographic proximity to other events resulting in copycats?

part of the reason is we have apologists here who say "that's still fewer deaths than so and so."

she is probably mentally ill and committed the act during a period of extreme delusion.
have to wonder how she got the guns, clearly she can't buy them (i think), maybe her parents do a s**t job at putting them away.

the slenderman girls come to mind.

about 39 years ago, to the day, Brenda Spencer shot up Cleveland Elementary School, and when they asked her why she did it, she replied, "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day." she had gotten the rifle as an xmas gift from her parents.

this was her in 1996. when her father bought her the rifle and 500 rounds of ammo, she wondered aloud, "I asked for a radio and he bought me a gun." When asked why he might have done that, she answered, "I felt like he wanted me to kill myself."

Not sure if you're asking about ab's historical post or the op.

That's the thing with the numbers.. highest per capita gun ownership rates in the world = more of them accessible to children. There's a very different gun culture in the USA than Canada and many more Americans opt to own guns. Obviously they're not all as careful with them as they should be.

It's like countries that ban fireworks have virtually zero firework related accidents. If you legalise it you can expect injuries to kids.

Same level of irresponsible government that legalises guns

most things i read about older americana seem to suggest that giving children firearms as gifts was more common back in the day. but if that's less common now (helicopter-parentism?) why have school shootings become more common?

is it a failure to instill responsibility? is it a mental heath issue? i wouldn't be surprised if young people these days were more stressed than their parents or grandparents.

columbine really opened the floodgates. :(

I have nothing but sympathy for school shooters. Most if not all I hear about do it after being mistreated poorly from students and teachers. This of course reminds me of myself back in high-school when I was mistreated by the students and faculty there and all the times I just wanted to nuke the place with everyone in it.

I don't know what the story is with this girl but nevertheless, this report brought back some sad memories.

sorry, I got mixed up in the past. I brought it up to show it was not the first female child who shot up a school.

My grandmother gave me and my cousin our first 22 pistols when we were 4. It was to keep us safe from wild animals and hippies, when we went out to play...
