Trump would be doing a good thing for many people if he did this. He would be reuniting people with their families. Many of those at the border have families who lives in these "sanctuary" areas--both legally and illegally.

Hopefully, this is not a ploy to "bring out" the family members who are already here illegally and living in those "sanctuary" areas.

It's a ploy to shame the Sanctuary Cities into either "putting up" or "shutting up". The leaders of those cities know that if they accept Mr. Trump's offer, they will be putting a burden on their already-strained city budgets; and if they don't accept Mr. Trump's offer, they will be exposed as virtue-signalling hypocrites. It's lose-lose for the Sanctuary Cities.

Think "Poker", not "Chess".

Yes, very apt, the "think poker, not chess."

Trump in terms of policy and action is very much a wing it kind of person. He'll jump in and go forward relying on his particular skillset to navigate what follows. Also crucially, he's not married to his plans, he can and will change his mind rather than continue on disastrously. And he manages to do that without it coming back to bite him. There's no getting hung up about it, he just carries on forward.

And also, it teaches the lesson that you can't just open the border. Just as the individual sanctuary cities will get overstretched, America itself would get overstretched if you just opened the border.

What is really the problem with establishing an Ellis Island-type immigrant processing center?

Think about it ... what is really the problem with establishing a ghetto for any ethic group? For example, the Warsaw ghetto was a "processing center" for Jews and Slavs during WWII.

How is that establishing a ghetto? Don't you think you're going too far right now?

I'm a Jew. I know about the Warsaw Ghetto.

Ellis Island was a processing center for immigrants. Sometimes, it wasn't so nice. Most of the time, though, people spent a few hours there, then were sent on their way into America as documented immigrants. About 20% were examined for various diseases---physical and mental. But only about 2% were rejected and deported. Mainly for "diseases" which would be easily treatable today---like "trachoma" or "Barber's Itch."

My grandmother went through the "Ellis Island" experience in 1910.

We could learn from the mistakes of the past Ellis Island. And establish a processing station which would document people coming in. Without perpetuating the abuses of those days.

Most "illegal immigrants" don't want to be "illegal immigrants."

Harsh as it sounds, the easier they make it the more people south of the border will want to use it. Back in the Ellis Island days the US wanted and needed immigrants, now it doesn't nearly as much. And probably what's wanted are those coming in with visas and such, not enormous caravans. It's probably seen as like the difference between someone applying for a job and someone looking for a handout.

Most of these migrants are not looking for a "handout." They're looking for jobs.

Just like the immigrants of the old days.

It was just an analogy for lack of a better one. I'm sure you know what I mean. And I'm not saying that's how it should be viewed, but probably is.

Then YOU give them jobs. Santa Ana (a Sanctuary City) already has a surplus of people looking for work, and many of those people live on the grounds of City Hall and the Orange Country government.

Obviously, this is a problematic situation.....

But...don't forget....there was a similar situation with "Okies" who migrated to California from the Dust Bowl. The Okies were just as Americans as the Californians.....

That was then, this is now. And Okies weren't particularly well liked then and still aren't to a degree.

I don't anticipate 100 million Central Americans coming to America over the next few years....

I still feel the "guest worker" program was something that could have worked.

In the year 1907, over 1 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island. Many of them happened to wind up in major population centers, causing the overcrowding which is feared would happen with immigrants today.

I believe there could be a problem caused by more mechanized farming----because they would replace the farm workers now employed (many of whom are immigrants).

I think a better comparison from the past is the all Irish suddenly flowing in because of the potato famine.

As long as cheap labor is needed, immigrants -- especially the illegal ones -- will provide it. The only thing that replaces cheap labor is even cheaper labor, robots included.
