In the video posted along with Regunberg’s statement, protesters in yellow T-shirts are seen blocking the entrance to Wyatt staff parking when a black pickup truck quickly drives up to them and stops just short of the protesters.
When protesters rise and start clamoring around the truck and banging around it, the truck pushes forward again causing protesters to scream.
Soon after the second move forward by the truck, other guards come out ordering protesters to move back, with one claiming to be a federal officer.
Rhode Island House Minority Leader Blake Filippi (R-Block Island, Charlestown, South Kingstown, Westerly) tweeted his reaction to the incident early Thursday morning.
“Expecting swift and decisive action by law enforcement,” Filippi said. “The actions by the truck driver don’t appear to be in self defense, or defense of others, from imminent harm - the only justification for violence.”
Regunberg added that local police at the scene declined to intervene, arrest the guard, or take down witness statements when approached by protesters.
“I also want to make very clear that literally dozens of us from tonight’s protest asked, clamored, demanded that the police take witness statements about the attack, and they actively refused to do so,” Regunberg said. “What kind of violence is someone like that willing to regularly unleash on powerless detainees, inside a prison where there are no cameras and no accountability?”
The chief of the Central Falls Police Department, Colonel Daniel J. Barzykowski, said that the accusations of police declining to take down statements from protestors was not true.
There were no reports of protesters being arrested.
Lifespan declined to comment on the hospitalized protesters conditions, citing federal privacy laws.
Neither the Central Falls Police Department, City of Central Falls, Office of the R.I. Attorney General, ICE, or the local outlet immediately responded to request for comment.
