what term limits have the effect of, is transferring institutional power to the bureaucracy. it is tempting to just wanna throw the baby out with the bathwater, however.

McCarthy says Ocasio-Cortez should accept Yoho's apology
Quote:
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Thursday said that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) should accept Rep. Ted Yoho’s (R-Fla.) apology he issued from the House floor Wednesday, adding that he believes the gesture was appropriate and that the lower chamber should refocus on debating policy.

"I think that when someone apologizes, they should be forgiven," McCarthy told reporters at a press conference on Thursday.

Wednesday, the Florida Republican made a statement on the House floor Wednesday morning and apologized for the "abrupt manner" in which he confronted Ocasio-Cortez but said that he does not apologize for his "passion."

Ocasio-Cortez later said she did not accept the apology.

McCarthy said he believes the New York Democrat should accept the apology, noting House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said he thought that Ocasio-Cortez would appreciate Yoho's words after his statement on the floor.

“I watched that Congressman Yoho went to the floor and apologized not once but twice to the congresswoman from New York. I watched the majority leader of the House accept his apology," McCarthy said.

"In America, I know people make mistakes, we're a forgiving nation. I also think when someone apologizes they should be forgiven — I don't understand that we're going to take another hour on the floor to debate whether the apology was good enough or not," he said.

McCarthy said that while the Democrats will take an hour to comment on the controversial exchange, they are unwilling to talk about other matters he believes are more pressing.

“He said he was sorry, he said I'm sorry to the congresswoman from New York. But the Democrats won't take an hour to debate the accountability of China — they refute it. They don't even give us a moment of time, but that's what we're spending an hour on," McCarthy said.

McCarthy said while he doesn't agree with the language Yoho used, he feels the apology was sincere.

“Yes, he made a mistake, and yes we apologized for it. And yes, the majority leader accepted it. And yes, we have big work to do on this floor. People should not be called names, people should be treated with respect regardless of philosophical differences,” he continued.

“And I think it's appropriate that he apologized and I think in a new world and a new age we now determine whether to accept when someone says I'm sorry, whether it's a good enough apology for them.”

That was not an apology that was an excuse masquerading as an apology and masquerading very badly.
Congressman Who Assailed AOC Offers Terrible Apology for the Ages
Quote:
“I rise to apologize for the abrupt manner of the conversation I had with my colleague from New York,” Yoho began. He was off to a decent enough start, though calling the conversation “abrupt” does not exactly align with the description of the “brief but heated exchange” that appeared in The Hill Tuesday. Nor does it align with AOC’s own description of the “virulent harassment,” which began with Yoho calling the New York City congresswoman “disgusting” for suggesting that rising poverty in NYC is responsible for the city’s current crime wave.

Yoho then seemed to confirm the profane quote attributed to him, but said, “The offensive name-calling words attributed to me by the press were never spoken to my colleagues, and if they were constructed that way, I apologize for their misunderstanding.” In other words: I said it, but I said it so she couldn’t hear it.

The “apology” only got worse from there. After becoming briefly emotional while remembering his time as a young adult on food stamps — “I know the face of poverty, and for a time it was mine” — Yoho committed to conducting himself “from a place of passion and understanding.”

Then he offered this gem: “I cannot apologize for my passion, or for loving my God, my family, and my country.” He did not explain what any of that has to with accosting a congresswoman and calling her a “b***h.”

Should anything to the right of AOC be considered fascist?

Say what you will about her but in just 18 months she has gone from bartender to the spokesperson of the democratic party. Some say she has done nothing for her district but kill good paying Amazon jobs. She has also single-handedly put an end to dumb blonde jokes. Her mind is so open one can see from one ear to the other!

Actually, it’s people like you that have given her the elevated national status. Democratic leadership has no use for her, she took out one of their own to get the seat. If the right would stop castigating her she’d disappear from the national radar, but the baseless attacks and harassment provide her free publicity. It’s at your own peril too, her popularity has seen a nice long upward trajectory, when people actually hear her speak outside the media bubble they realize she’s not crazy and 2nd guess everything coming out of her detractors’ mouths.

AOC & co would not be as known and influential as they are if Republicans hadn't treated it like the end of the world that leftist women of color have a platform in Congress, even if social Democrats/democratic socialists still are a minority voice in the party.

The party's core members are still very much capitalists. AOC is just openly critical of capitalism and Republicans go into panic mode when a poc politician seems remotely anti-capitalist. Think back to them frothing at the mouth accusing Obama of being a socialist, despite him being solidly capitalist--if not as much as most Republicans. Apparently being any further left than Bill Clinton gets you labelled an America-hating radical.

I'm sure Yoho is one of those Republicans who bemoan the supposed decline of civility and bipartisanship in Washington. I guess he only cares when it helps Republicans enact their policies :(
