Kathy is living the reality of a changing climate, having lost eight cars to rising tides.

But it won't impact her vote
Since Kathy Blake moved onto Hoopers Island in the United States in 1996, she's lost eight cars to rising waters. But this is Trump country. And for voters like her, climate change will not be high on their list of priorities when it comes time to vote in November.

and here's why

I know several homes and buildings have fallen into the sea, it's happened in Seattle too so you see all these pipes sticking out of the sand. All that used to be land and roads with houses and then the ocean level raised and so did the tide and it all eroded into the sea. Same happened to Bayoceon, Oregon.

One of my online friends who is a climate denier thinks it's just sand that shifts and it changes and that ocean currents change as well.

Any town on the coast, this is doomed to happen when they live so close to the ocean.

There are a number of issues where Trump has failed but COVID and the environment are the two most glaring.

Despite everything that's happened Trump voters will stay with him....even if they die

Trump is doing something about climate change.

He's slowing down immigration.

Less people = less pollution.

But what about all that hot air he emits every time he opens his mouth to speak?

Have made a sincere effort to understand the psychology behind people's unwavering support of the Orange Man. Logic and common sense are not parts of their equation. Do not think that I will ever understand, so will do my best to just practice tolerance.

Like something I read somewhere, "Opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks."

These people living on this island will just deal with the floods and keep making repairs to their homes. They like their home too much. Oh well, to each their own.

They are also full of "fecal matter".

True, that's a valid point. We have a prime minister in Australia whom went on holiday to Hawaii when most of eastern Australia was burning in a bushfire. He also happens (not surprisingly) to be a climate skeptic.

But of course people who suffer flood or fire will still vote against their best interests but will tell themselves that Trump isn't responsible for climate change even if he isn't exactly helping stop it.

California Trump supporters will still vote for him, even if they were among those who lost their homes in the fires. Trump declined federal disaster assistance for the California fires, but that's not going to convince his supporters to vote for anyone but Trump. https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/15/politics ... index.html

Despite that, California's popular and electoral votes will probably go towards Biden. Trump will get votes in the more conservative parts of California, but it won't be enough for him to get those electoral votes.

Yes the old republican mantra of "rugged individualism" applies where (like the smoking Marlborough man) a hardy republican faithful must pull themselves up by their own bootstraps and not ask for a handout to fix their homes.

They always fall for that one...

Trump creates chaos and his followers continue to support/defend him. Trump is a climate change denier and his policies accelerate climate change. Trump policies favour corporate profits at the cost of environment and people.

There is a whole section of the Texas coast that is similar to the area in the article. Between High Island and Sabine Pass (the Texas-Louisiana border), there is a segment of State Highway 87 that has been eroded to the point of being impassible.

But those who voted for him were more afraid of being "raped by Mexicans", "having their guns taken away" and "not being allowed to pray." Jeez, they think wearing a face mask is "socialism".

President Trump rejects California's request for financial help with wildfires.  Yet, places in California like Newport Beach are among his favorite cities to drum up financial and political support.

I guess it is a matter of "Trees don't vote; wealthy white people do".

You do realize those people continue to exist regardless of whether they enter the US or not.
Enforcing intentionally racist immigration laws and regulations is not beneficial to the environment. It is a petty machismo distraction from actual environmental issues.
Indeed, we will be seeing more immigrants from the Global South as climate change disrupts their economies and creates scarcity and instability. Do you want less immigration? Fight climate change first. And fight global economic inequality while you're at it.
