Man Arrested in ‘Malicious Arson Attack' on Christmas Tree at FOX News in Midtown

Quote:
A 49-year-old Brooklyn man has been arrested for allegedly setting a huge Christmas tree outside the FOX News building in midtown Manhattan ablaze early Wednesday, causing a wild scene and endangering passersby, police said.

Craig Tamanaha was taken into custody at the West 48th Street and Sixth Avenue scene just after midnight and charged hours later with a bevy of crimes, including arson, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and trespassing, the NYPD said.

Police officials said the fire, which was deemed international by fire marshals, caused an estimated $500,000 in property damage in addition to unnecessarily frightening anyone who happened to walk by as the stunning scene developed.

It wasn't immediately clear how the fire was set, though authorities say Tamanaha allegedly had a lighter at the time he was taken into custody. It's not immediately clear if that was what sparked the flames, but authorities are checking all angles.

It's also not clear why Tamanaha allegedly set the blaze in the first place, but police say the fire didn't appear to be premeditated or politically motivated. They believe he acted alone.

Fox Square All-American Christmas Tree arson suspect free on no bail

Quote:
The 49-year-old suspect who was arrested Wednesday in connection with the alleged torching of a Christmas tree outside the New York City headquarters of Fox News and News Corp. has been freed on no bail.

“I didn’t do it," Tamanaha told reporters outside the building.

Investigators said the 50-foot artificial tree was set ablaze using a burning piece of cardboard, the New York Post reported. The fire’s damage was estimated to cost about $500,000.

The arson and other charges Tamanaha was facing – including criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and criminal trespass -- were considered misdemeanors, not requiring a bail payment under liberal New York City’s laws, Assistant District Attorney Matthew Bayley told the Post.

Nah. SJWs aren't smart enough to operate a lighter.

Seriously, though, it's pretty low torching Christmas displays. Although I have to admit, it's sometimes fun to cruise around late at night with an air gun and pop those inflatable decorations. Those are just awful, plus it's a great way to reduce stress.

Fits with my theory.

They did it to themselves, torched their own tree, for more of that old time religious war they seem all about sometimes.

Aaah, yes, $500,000.00 Christmas tree - just like Jesus would have liked! No sense in spending that money on charitable acts instead.

The article describes it as "artificial". So it was plastic. No real woody plant was harmed!

Ha! I think less is more when it comes to Christmas decorations. A few simple lights are tasteful.

I like it where just the trees and shrubs have small lights in them.Nothing giant and flashing. There is a Japanese strolling garden in Springfield MO that has been lit up with no inflatable Santa’s or giant candy canes. That I would like to see.
