As soon as it was announced, I knew it would fail. The planners just assumed that people could afford to walk off their jobs at any time without risk of being fired. That is just not the case for many workers who need that paycheck to live on, especially those not protected by unions.

With regard to retail, non union shops like Target and WalMart almost always pay more than shops run by the UFCW. They don't do much about getting the workers a living wage and still expect dues every month.

Also this demand that all jobs pay a living wage is absurd. Employers don't control cost of living and it's ridiculous to expect it from Door Dash and grocery bagging or something similar.

I don't think it's absurd at all. If you can't pay your workers enough to live on you shouldn't be in business.

The rate of inflation has gone up more than pay.

But where will the money come from? The big guys at the top. They shouldn't be given such a large amount that the workers they drive into the ground, who actually make their business work, can't pay their rent and feed their children. It's disgusting. We live in a really skewed society.

They are in business to.make money for themselves. They have no obligation to pay it out to anyone. If it's not enough get another job.

Here is the deal. A business will not pay its workers more that the market can bear. That is regardless of inflation or other economic conditions. If there are too many workers, wages will go down to meet market demand. If there are too few workers, wages will go up until there is more of the resource available.

The primary purpose of a business is to earn a profit. Any other goal is secondary to earning a profit. Certainly, workers have the right to withhold their work in order earn a higher wage but the business is also free to find workers willing to work for the wages they are offering. If no one is willing to work for the wages being offered, then the business will either have to do without or increase their wages until they get workers. That is how capitalism works.

Dreadful attitude. Timpsons don't behave like that and they make a profit.

I'm sure if you keep repeating this enough you might start to believe it, but that won't make it true.

People get rich by exploiting lower paid workers. Slaves if they can get them, low pay if not. Read the history of the building of the railroad across the western states, among other examples. It was cheaper to work people to death than it was to treat them well and pay them well.

And that is going on around the world, not just in the US.

It should be criminal.
