Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Tests Positive for Covid-19

Quote:
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the New York Democratic congresswoman, has tested positive for Covid-19, according to her office.

Ocasio-Cortez, who is fully vaccinated and has had a booster shot, is “experiencing symptoms and recovering at home,” her office said in a statement on Sunday.

Ocasio-Cortez, 32, was embroiled in a social-media war with Republicans over Covid-19 in late December during a trip to Florida with her boyfriend. She was photographed having drinks outside, provoking criticism from many Republicans that she wasn’t abiding by strict pandemic safety rules. New York requires masks indoors, not outside.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has consistently opposed most virus-related restrictions, tweeted a welcome, saying he hoped she was “enjoying a taste of freedom here in the Sunshine State.”

At one point, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted back at a critic that Republicans were projecting their “sexual frustrations.”

The conservative media is having a field day that the pro mask mandate AOC took her mask off
Their is no proof she caught it because she took her mask off.

She took her mask off outdoors. Outdoors has been safe, the Black Lives Matter protest and riots did not cause any increase in cases, but with Omicron who knows.

AOC is just the latest pro mandate hypocrite to not do what they impose on others. Those of us raving at the refusenicks ought to save some of our ire for these hypocrites. IMHO the refusnicks are wrong but not completely crazy to conclude the science is BS when they see so many “in the know” not following the science.

Omicron may be “mild” but it still really sucks.

When AOC staged her little publicity stunt wearing her "Tax The Rich " dress, she wasn't wearing a mask, but all the servants at the event were .

Do as I say, not as I do.

As far as I can tell, everyone has their foolish moments where they take off their mask. Most people seem to feel that for photos and speeches they can and should have their masks off; part of the time v distance equation as developed before omicron; I've never gotten comfortable with it, but the pattern is quite consistent. Note that it does NOT mean they aren't wearing their masks otherwise. Photos only capture a moment in time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a lot of more conservative politicians and pundits have caught and died from COVID than Democrat ones. Masks aren't a solution, no one has ever claimed they are, but they do improve odds at little to no cost those asked to wear them.

It's different when they aren't the ones calling for extended and intrusive measures and using guilt and shame on those who disagree, they might qualify for Darwin awards in some cases, but they aren't being hypocrites the way unmasked Dems are. Also, as VM mentioned, the optics are simply awful for them when they keep getting caught maskless at parties, particularly when the servers are all masked, it really looks bad for the party trying to hang onto working class voters.

Whether or not you realize it, you just summed up why the U.S. is in the horrible state it is.

"At least she ain't as bad as these guys!"

Being an apologist for bad people just because they aren't the worst is detrimental to our survival. The lesser of two evils is still evil, and when we play that game, it perpetuates a system that is evil by nature.

She'll get her [unneeded] doses of Pfizer's 3CLpro inhibitor, like the other kings and queens, as the vulnerable random citizens do without.

Most masks won't stop an airborne virus. N95 and glasses are alright. Surgical and glasses will be minimum (might lower initial inoculum so less severe outcome). The vaccines won't do all that much either outside of lowering severity a little due to the [mostly] conserved t-cell epitopes compared to b-cell epitopes. Even with this vaccine failure, it'll be better in the long run that Omicron came along due to retroactive immunity and vaccines/natural immunity providing roadblocks against the more severe mutants.

Whomever "made" it did humanity a solid.

Democrats have been pretty darn bad at optics and pretty darn bad at connecting with their core voters. The irony is that AOC was connecting to her cash strapped constituency; I wonder how much damage all this has done.

There is some element of truth in that, but masks/vaccines delay/reduce symptoms and reduce ICU numbers which is why 99.9% of medically trained poeople with PhDs and MBBS's in front of their name advocate for their use.

The smart women and men with abbreviations next to their names will say vaccines and a recent booster will be a good idea as they'll aid in eradicating the more severe mutants as Omicron creates widespread retroactive immunity to said severe mutants among the population regardless of immunologic status, along with creating less personal risk against the more severe ones until that eradication happens.

Omicron kinda feels like repentance to me, but that's neither here nor there. Sometimes you get lucky.

I'm not so sure that's true, she's been such a large presence on the national stage that I'm not sure if she's doing much in the way of actual retail politics in her district, I remember hearing rumbles about primary challenges but didn't really follow up on them. Current word is that she might be gunning for Kirsten Gillibrand's Senate seat, which would likely be a better fit for her brand, but would also be much more competitive than her home district, which she won with very low turnout.

Evolution likes to go forwards rather than backwards when similar selective pressures are there. Delta would eventually go the way of Omicron on the background of high levels of community immunity, it'd just take several years. It grabbing bits of Omicron via recombination will confer the advantages of Omicron as they'll be the fittest in the current fitness landscape, and those advantages lead to less severity (spike trimer conformation changes being one). Omicron is several years off in the future when it comes to evolution, created via a HIV community, Molnupiravir trials, cell lines incubated with neutralizing antibodies, some people feeling really guilty for their sins or something else. HIV will be the "right" one there.

There's always been a chance of an actual severe mutant arising, and they've made those in labs. They don't fit the fitness landscape in the wild it seems since they haven't arisen (not many mutations needed; sometimes just one), maybe as they lose transmissibility and/or kill the host too quickly.
